View Full Version : Beginner Head-Modeling Ė Trying to get it right

Hello Everyone,

Iíve recently started 3d modeling. Iíve read about topology, edge loops, quads and all that stuff I didnít even know existed. Iím not sure why I decided to do a head model as basically my first Ľseriousę (at least for me personally) project. Guess I like a challenge.

So Iíve got a top and sideview and started to go. Iíve got half of the head, pretty rough without any detail (no ear, real nose, eyes yet). I guess what I want to know is: Did I miss anything? Is this Ľokayę topology-wise or are there big errors?

looking a the mesh itís still very mechanic I guess, probably have to make the loops rounder. Something I wonder about is the eye area. It looks quite okay upfront, but weird from the side. Iím also not sure about the mouth area. Iíve decided not to add geometry until what I have looks about right.

Any suggestions or comments are very welcome, be harsh by any means!

You are missing the nasolabial fold loop, the big crease on the side of the nose. Other than that it looks fine for an initial blockout mesh.

Hello Lephil,

It definitely good for you first serious model. Definitely try to keep as many poly's as possible. :)

I am also learning about modeling a head. I am working on the ears right now. Finding it a bit difficult. Mostly cause I am trying to find the best way to do it. I have tried modeling a poly ear but it just doesn't look right. Tried sculpting it in Mudbox and importing it. Too many poly's, reduced it and it turned to tri's.

I think the best way to do it is to model the poly's cause it will be easier to attach to your head model.

Does anybody else have an good ear modeling tutorials and how to go about attaching it to the head?

This is my first realistic head, before this I made a terrible-looking chibi (little characters in anime) head.

It's looking good. You may want to work at fleshing out the lips. That will give you a big crash course in how the edge loops should flow. Also, edge loops for organic topology are a bit easier to think about if you think of how the muscles are shaped around the face rather than just the surface shape. That will aid in the transformation if you ever get it to a point where you will animate it.
