sebnutt 10-02-2003, 08:33 PM hi guys,
everuybody has heard about this romanrtic comedy with Mc Gregor and Zellwegger, but whazt you didn't notice, is the specail amount of 3D effects within the film.
Here are some great pics, showing the conception of those 3D shots in the movie..

The only other full CG new york I"ve seen was in Final Fantasy, but that was post-apocolyptic.
I think MJV was working on a CG version of the city at one time, but I'm not sure.

In the US that was called "Down With Love", not "Down By Love". Looked kinda interesting but got mediocre reviews and no one I know saw it or recommended it, so it's in the "consider renting it" category.
As far as CG new yorks, the nighttime manhattan in the first X-Men was cg, though I guess more 2D/3D in parts. And of course there's all the CG city in Spiderman, esp. the final shot, but nothing showing the entire thing. Can't remember any others offhand, just totally fictional cities.

What was the purpose of doing a full cg New York? There's plenty of stock shots that already look like that.

Same reason for climbing Everest. That's a big accomplishment, especially if it will pass for the real city.

The matte painting looks much better than the 3d elements in that second one, imo.

yeah, that is such an interesting concept... shooting everything green screen and adding it digitally. i'll probably have to check it out eventually. wonder if it looks any more convincing than Attack of the Clones...

Maybe motion tracking?
It looks like they might have been mapping photos onto rough geometry. Nothing wrong with that - that's how I'd do it :) - but it's not the same as modeling every last detail in 3D (which you'd have to be crazy to attempt... :argh: ).

Actully there are more shots than those. There are a couple of shots in the film where they indeed restore old NY footage. I think I remember a few other shots where digital matte paintings were used like when Renne Zellwegger arrives to NY first and you get a look at NY from the ground level. Lots of subtle stuff here and there. It was actually done like those movies in the 50s.
Other VFX were actually done old style as wel. Views from Renne's apartment were a simple miniature cuty and painted background quite evident. Some shots inside cabs looked like traditional back projection. I thought it was very clever.
I actually did enjoy that movie quite a bit, saw it twice. I you have seen those old movies, especially the Doris day ones you'll get a kick out of Down with Love.
Speaking of other movies with CG cities, well there's several shots in Gangs of NY. There's the entrance to chicago in Road to Perdition, old NY in The Time Machine, New Orleans in Interview with a Vampire and so on.

But, the movie is set in the '60s, so they needed NY from 40 years ago and there's no way a real aerial shot from then would've looked as clean. It would've screamed "1960 stock footage!" :D
