View Full Version : Character: Martian Tripod, from H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds@
thebrave 10-02-2003, 06:49 PM This is my take on the Tripods from 'War of the Worlds' i've tried to stick as closely as possible to what H.G. himself described in the novel (omited the basket though as it looked dodgy). Well any crit welcome. Be gentle :)

Very, very cool thing! :buttrock:
Only issue I can find is the lack of bevels on the edges. Everyhting that is not round, is too sharp.
Great work.

WOW!!!! thats some really cool stuff!!
I never read the book myself, but this is the coolest version I've seen for the tripods
Are you going to texture it?
Luv to see this animated, but I sure are heck won't want to try to do it myself.

What keeps it from falling to the ground? i mean the joints are not toutching.. is the caples stiff or is it working in 0 gravety ??
Cool model thou :applause:

Read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, have we? ;)
But I actually think I prefer your design. Very "steampunk", yet alien. Simply beautiful.
Only things I have to add are:
What BgDM said about the edges: I concur.
As a Wells' purist: What is that grenade launcher doing there? And as I recall: In the book the tripods have "metal claws" with which they "picked up men and bashed them against trees". I don't know where the whole tentacle idea came from, but I've seen them in other renditions of the tripods.

Very cool, they have a very unearthy look about them them. I like that a lot.
The only thing that breaks up this image is the rocket launcher thing on its back. I dont know if it is one, but it give makes the thing more like a human design. Anyway very cool. How about textures?

Very nice.
It's good to see an original take on the design.
It's not how i pictured the martian tripods when i read the book, but this is the best design i've seen so far

It does look kinda like Kev O'Neill's version of the tripods, particularly in the legs and the tentacles.
Having said that, it's a cool look, and a great model, and as someone else mentioned, Kev wasn't the first artist to include the tentacles.
Nice work!

I love the tripods, they look very alien as said before
The art on your site is amazing. Its very creative and you are good at making those bulging veins as well as the muscle structure. The "dick head" picture is a little strange though. In Design>"lion alts" the comparison between the two tigers is great, but you need to blend the background a little more. Post the Close-ups for the tripod into the thread , they really show the details.
its nice... texture that mofo
Evil...i am rereading the book right now
You HAVE to animate that thing

Raman, thanks for thee complinets (that goes to all of you, cheers)
yeah, grenade launcher, in the novel the tripods do have what is effectivly a large gun that they use to fire large projectiles that upon impact with the ground, burst open and release a deadly 'black smoke'.
i will conceed that the launcher does look to humanesque though fair enuff :)

Fantasic work! I wish I could stick to a project long enough to get that good !! :banghead:
That's a really cool design! I love that spiderey look. The rocket launcher has been mentioned but I also think that it would look much more intimidating if the head was more impersonal...leave out the "eyes" to make it more mysterious (who is in there? can they see us? which direction is it looking?) and keep the head smooth to stay consistent with the legs. There are no ribs/plates anywhere else and it looks kinda out of place. Other than that I love it!
I'm not sure what it's doing in the Finished Work forum though, it's clearly not complete without textures and a nice scene of mayhem :)
