i created a bottle (made a polygon mesh, converted to subd, made a hole in the top, duplicated it, scaled it down, inverted the normals, then combined the two subds and joined the two holes together using append to polygon tool in polygon mode). It also has liquid in it. So far it works fine, here's a render:

But my problem is adding a label to it. I found a layered texture tutorial (www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/layeredtexture/), that method worked fine when I tried it on a non-hollow subd object (non-hollow as in there's no interior to the object), but when i try to follow the same steps on my bottle it doesn't work, Maya crashes to the desktop when I try to render, and in the viewport I get a weird "x-ray" effect, as I rotate around the bottle the side closest to the camera is transparent (and that's with just the label texture applied with no alpha channel, no glass shader, so that seems really odd)
Anyway, how do I fix this? Am I using the right method? I've been stumped on this for two days now... I'm not very experienced with Maya at the moment so it's hard to know what other methods to look for in the online help...
(Oh, I'm rendering with Mental Ray if that changes anything)
