View Full Version : 10k poly character model
Poopinmymouth 10-02-2003, 11:16 AM Well putting the nature mech to the side for now. I sort of wanted to do a gothy girl, since it is way out of my normal style. Very inspired by Underworld. This is just one hair style I was thinking of. I might go with a longer hair version, Ill see tho. Been combing the net for good goth girl pics. She is a vampire. ill think of some story later. 8-)

*edit, update
slowly but surely. widened the hips a little to make it look like her lateral muscles are intact.

I'm curious why you created so many segments to make a such a high poly character, instead of just using some NURMS Subdevisions? At least thats how it appears you did it. I'm honestly curious, because I'm new, and figured you could achieve the same results most of hte time with less polies on your low-poly model.

phil, sometimes i like to take things that are cliche, and see if I can make the new and original again. i dont always feel like doing something wonky and off the wall, just cause I dont want to do something that has been done before.
akumu, a low poly control cage that has been subdivided or nurbed is what Im guessing you mean. I never use them, because you dont have near the control you have over cutting and editing the verts yourself. i was going for a particular likeness, and I needed total control. even if I were to do a film res model, if i had the time, i would do all the vert placement myself rather than rely on a smoothing method. However, if your new to modeling, "dont try this at home" it is more difficult than control cage modeling, because instead of one point to move, by the end you have 5. so it has its benefits and downfalls, i just happen to like planning ahead and dealing with the downfalls, in order to reap the benefits.
hey this is looking cool and really quickly put together. I am a little worried about the jaw cheek line, its a bit unisex, not quite roundenough to be female and not quite square enough to be pumping much testosterone. I dont know what reference you are going for, so it would be really interesting to see. So far the mesh looks really good, pretty much faultless and i like the hair a lot, so i can only look forward to seeing what you do with it.

nice lips she has
yea... the jaw bone does appear to be a bit ambiguous as far as gender goes. maybe shorten the distance between the cheek bone and the base of the jaw. if you get my meaning. shes quite dark and goth looking.
good stuff.

Thanks tpe for the comments. Perhaps you can check out my reference, and tell me what I can change to better make it look like her. Victoria beckham, aka posh spice.
Modeling man, yup your right. its for polycount 8-)
freshcongaell. thanks for the comment on the lips, i put the most time into that. about the jaw bone, maybe check out victoria beckham pics and let me know how i can fix it?
thanks all

don't know if this ref pic helps but to me it seems the jaw is a bit more rounded and shorter and her cheek bones are more developed than in your model. I think, could be super excessive make up though. also the bridge of the nose is wider. keep it up :)
She is a very pointed girl isnt she :) but i think like freshcongaeel pointed out that the jaw needs rounding out a bit anyway, it looks like she was looking down and to oneside a little bit in whatever you used reference so what i would do is move the whole thing so as the jaw gets a little broader and points up a bit more but tht the neck stays where it is, does that make sence to you? whatever, if you can soften the jaw a bit and give her a litttle fuller cheeks and and possibly something with her forhead as she has a very high hair line that sort of decieves about her forhead it would make her a bit more feminin
I am thinking you used this
http://24ur.com/media/images/large/Nov2002/2017657.jpg
or this http://wow.telemovil.com/noticias/2002/11/4/ent1-4112002.jpg
and in both of them her head is a little of center and will look thinner around the jaw if you mirror it. also as she has blusher on her cheeks in the references making her cheeks look thinner than the actually are. its also funny how shedoes not look typical for her in either of them, maybe the makeup again? but theyare the best front on shots i could fined, in all the 3/4 you begin to see what she really looks like (as in freshcongaeels post).

Like i said the mesh is excelent and good luck, wish i could join you in the challange, its going to be a good one (and less work with no texturing) hope my hands wont be so full next time :(

this is what i mean...
http://www.hairy-cockroach-fairy.co.uk/~tpe/rubme.jpg
and not that the head is tilted a bit as well
but i was just thinking, you want her pretty gothy, so maybe its best to keep her the way she is, personally i like the model better than victoria

thanks a ton tpe, that helps me alot. as for what pics I used, i have a 3200x1200 desktop of about 45 faces of her, that I was referring to during modeling, so that I could make sure i was getting it correct. I think though in the picture I used as my front ortho, she was looking slightly to one side, I will adjust accordingly. Thanks again!

update. tried to take into account peoples suggestions. I like this longer hair much better. Got that sexy edge.

I really like the model, but there is one mistake that I can't overlook: the nose. The character has a very ectomorphic facial structure and the bridge of the nose is congruent. But the base of the nose is something from a more endomorphic structure, it's the kind of thing that you can look at for a long time and not put your finger on "what looks funny about it"
I Saw the reference image, and your models face is thinner and more ecto. than your ref. so I would say, either widen the face (I don't like that) or narrow the nose.
keep up the great work

whats the difference between endo and ecto?
robioto

Endomorph = fat/heavy build
Ectomorph = thin/slight build
Mesomorph = muscular/symetrical build
There's alot of information out there <on the web> describing the particulars of each body type. Usually people seem to be more combinations of these body stereotypes although there are alot of people that fit them perfectly.

The nostrils should come in a bit. I think that as they are right now they are too flared, too wide. Her nose is cuter than that, more pointed, dainty, more like a sprite or pixie.
The mention about the thin fragile structure of her bridge not being appropriate for the thicker nostril structure is true.
I like the loop structure, hope to see it animated soon.

this is just to hep me get my proportions right, so its not too well rendered. It also hints at the amount (or lack thereof) of clothing! hahah

I like your sketches, it should make a nice model. I'd love to see a finished sketch with the facial details filled in... :)

the face looks really great, but the body dun fit the concept...and u may spend more polygon on her body as she is a 10K character.
Double Post, I Can't Delete It. . . Sorry
Proportions look good, and the back looks especially well done, though the backs of the arms seem odd, too fat maybe.
The hips are also well done but the base of the pelvis (crotch) is a bit odd looking. That area seems too wide, or not to extend low enough, I'm not quite sure. (I hope that one make sense, after rereading it a couple of times I still don't Know a better way to word it.)

nice anatomy, i would just say that since you used soo many polies for the head, and it is a 10k model, i would use more on the body, it looks out of place. the head is very smooth, and the body is somewhat faceted. good work tho!
cheers

yeah... 10k poly may seem "a lot" but need to be used carefully.
and... aren't the flanks too strict? she looks like she was deformed by some disease
other than that... cool modeling, looking forward for your progresses
