mini cooper, modelled using maya and rendered in mental ray.

it was a project i started last year to learn maya, and was continually distracted by work and stuff. finally completed the model and the textures.

over the next few weeks i'm aiming to animate some camera moves on it and put together a quicktime.

Sheesh, this lil thing has been racing around a muddy English countryside, hasn't it? :D

Looks great - pity about the small render (you should try and find some webspace so that you are not limited by the file size restriction here on the forum - check out this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49775) for more info), so you can post larger, higher quality renders next time!

Perhaps you could have left some areas of the car slightly shiny and a bit reflective because where there is mud, there is water! So it would stand to reason that parts of the car got splashed and are a little wet :)

What might also look great is to find an actual photo of muddy track and composite this in - now that would be a fun task!

Good job overall, would be great to see some wireframes, and maybe another angle or two as well

Aaah hehe while I was posting my reply you went and posted a few more shots :)

Looks cool - perhaps the back brake lights are a little dull though (their shading is very soft), and you also can see the polygon divisions on the front indicator (the plastic of which also looks a tad too soft), but otherwise, good stuff :)

I generally don't look at car threads (being a female and all), but I do love them Mini Coopers! :D

Now thats f*%^ing awesome

this should be on the front page

i dont think there are any polys visible in the front. maybe u are
confusing the image from jpeg artifacts

and the mud looks good dry. i think thats what the intention was.

anyway. i think its brilliant. no comments here

the dirt looks a bit to evenly placed on the car, and some bends and chips on the fender flares would be sweet :-)

Nice looking over all, nice to see some dirty vehicles :)

Incredible work mrben. I think you've captured the shape of this classic perfectly. You have an excelent eye for shape and form. Love the rendering too. And I agree with phildog, definately worthy of front page.

car pictures are kinda boring and always the same for me, but this one's cool.
i agree with lady Leigh about some "shiny" areas.
great modelling too.

Probbably best made mini cooper I`ve seen so far.

really aweasome work. Can you post texture(s) you`ve used ?

mrben
10-03-2003, 10:37 AM
hi there,
yeah i can't really post the textures online as there's lots of them and they're huge. however i'm planning to write the whole shading and texturing process up as a tutorial.
there's nothing really special about the shaders, but the way the dirt all works together is fairly complex.

very rarely do I see a piece that makes me completely realize why I am in the 3D industry. Your little cooper is one of those pieces that make me fall in love with 3D all over again.
Thanks for that.

good textrue too. Is that the license sticker on the bottom left on the windscreen?

it looks nice at first shot, but after a while of looking at it i cant help thinking some of the proportions look wrong, particularly when concerning details, it looks like a few things are just on the wrong 1cm of being the right size. Did coopers have twin fuel tanks? Still the textures and render holds up well :)

heres a link to a cooper s about the same age, you can see there's subtle differences. The thing is about cars is they are like faces, especially old ones, if a line is out if distorts the character.

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~ZQ5M-SKT/mk1hama5966.JPG

i think the the most obvious thing is the height if the grill.

Windmill
10-03-2003, 02:10 PM
When it looks this nice, who cares if his proportions are a bit off (I can't see myself where). :)

BTW I don't normally like car pictures but I guess theres a certain charm about a dirty mini... good work mrben

technoguy
10-03-2003, 02:28 PM
Cool, this is a really nice render. Something about the proportions looks odd to me, is it the size of the tires? Other than that great work! Would love to see the wireframe. Oh, just wondering if you used global illumination and final gather in mental ray.:)

S. J. Tubbrit
10-03-2003, 02:39 PM
Would you mind explaing a little bit about how you created the dirty textures? Do you do it in one texture and then apply it, or do you have loads of seperates within Maya? If so, which channels and what not are you mapping to?

pete.cook
10-03-2003, 02:43 PM
I thought exactly the same as Halo when I first saw the picture. Something about the size of the wheels in relation to the rest of the car just doesn't look right. It is probably just the angle of the picture. To my knowledge, Cooper's didn't have twin fuel tanks, just the one on the left of the car (refered to as the "nearside" in the UK). The car had enough trouble accomodating one fuel tank!

Thats not to take away from a fantastic rendering job. The textures and the mud effect look great.

/edit: Finally twigged what made it look odd to me. There's no bumpers on it!

He said it was is first project to learn maya. And I think he made a really really cool mini! I love it!
Perhaps it´s a tuned cooper and the builder changed some of the propotions. :p

Looking forward to the tutorial!

I would have preferred a bit brighter enviornment it is presently a bit on the darker side(just according to my taste)

Normally I hate cars. In fact most of the time I hate cars.
This however I like. Wonderful job, just maybe add some more mud to the tires, they look clean compared to the rest of this car.

Hey nice work. I appreciate that its not super clean and new looking. Very good. :)

sebast1an2
10-03-2003, 07:34 PM
yes.. modeling & textures good, rendering bad (standart fg setup)... i see you have the problem that your shader looks not speculary enough in the fg-sphere. try to add a directional light with 0.400 inensity an turn the brightness of the sphere down, to compensate the brighter result..

hope that looks better..

Awesome rendition of a Mini Cooper, The large shot you have up on the 1st page has a real nice sense of motion…as if it was coming out of a turn.

Although what is it with the recent Mini Cooper craze… it’s all over marketed Hype, I don’t like Hype. Actually I hate Hype… We are not mindless tools.

Anyway…Nice work.

thanks everyone for the kind comments and crits

essentially the dirt textures are based on masks .. so there's a clean paint layer, with dirt masks through to the mud ..

it's not all painted into one map .. each panel has a basic dirt mask which mixes in the fine dry mud, and then a splatter mask that brings in the chunky splatter up the sides.

that way i can quickly move and change the mud if needs be, i'll post the tutorials hopefully the end of next week.

thanks !

lovely.

I really shouldn't have looked at this thread.

I've had an Austin Cooper S in progress for nearly a year and just don't have the time to devote to it, but I want to finish it soooo badly after seeing yours.

Being the proud owner of a real one, and a 3D newbie I'm impressed out of speech!

To the critics:
1) Dirt on tires : this is a rally car. Windows & lights look reasonably clean too, so looks like the car has just been serviced in the middle of a rally :)
2) It is missing the bumpers - the works rally cars usually had them, but not the overriders as shown in the pic elsewhere in the thread. It's also missing the lovely "grille mustache" which makes it look a bit worn
3) The wheels are 10" big, and look good to me!
4) Cooper S had twin tanks as an option from 1964on. The rally cars always used them afaik

My "model" :

And whene will you have finished the tutorial? :)

Man, thats excellent. This is really inspirational, I have had Maya for a little less than a year, and thats the very reason I ahven't hardly done anything with it. I am so busy trying to keep money comin in doing illustration, I ahven't made time for learning. You have just proven to me someone really can bang away at the rock pile a little at a time and make progress! I jsut have to find somehting I really want to model :surprised

Look for my post in a year brother!
