Here's what I want to do:

Title: 'to catch a faerie by the toe"
A hot faerie gaurdian of the floating oak saplings gets nabbed by an adventerous maouse while gathering cherries on her day off.

or something like that ;-)

 I swear I thought your sketch was actually a photo for a moment. You must be kidding :surprised That IS a photo, hey? There is no way that is a sketch, man....
hehehehe
Cool idea  Really cute concept :) That little mouse almost looks perverted though - can't really say why, he just does.... :surprised
But I'm looking forward to seeing these characters modelled! It's tricky to get this kind of cuteness in 3D... Good luck!!
dobermunk
05-29-2002, 12:32 PM
Yeah, this is the first level sketch kinda mode: anything goes!
No client here, so I'll jump right to 3D work :-}
Otherwise I'd work out more detailed sheets in photoshop for the okay. I've already got the mouse mostly done. Screen shots by tonight!
About the mouse being perverse: he is. He's been chief creative at an advertising agency and has finally fallen over the edge!
Here's a mugshot of him discussing the impossibilities of selecting only a limited number of eager mousette internships while wine-battling with profit-minded clients more interested in the evening's excursions than with the content of their billion dollar cheese campaign. Yes, he's had too much of the enchanted forest.

Cool mouse! Very cute, very quick :) ..kinda has the stuart little vibe on the face.
Cool idea, too..for some reason the sketch makes me think of twice upon a time..dunno why. Anyway, nifty keen :D Can't wait to see how this comes out..

This is a pretty cool idea. I like the concept sketch. Dont loose interest and keep goin. :bounce: :bounce:
Yeah, I was gonna say something about stuart little but that's probably just because he's a mouse :)

I really love this concept. It's so playfull and suggestive at the same time. It reminds me of some of the "Merry Melodies" cartoons where as a kid it's just slapstick fun, then if you see it as an adult it's like "whoa, hello" is this the same cartoon? :surprised .
As far as your wook so far: I like the layout of your sketch. I love the happy/perverted look to the mouse's face. Actually all of the facial expressions in the sketch really show the character's mood at the time very effectively. The modeling looks really good too. I'm guessing that since you gave a pink texture to the mouse's skin you will be adding fur to it in a photo-real style?
Great work so far! I think this one's going to be great.
dobermunk
05-29-2002, 05:01 PM
Wow. Thanks for the comments.
Yeah, the word 'enchanted' for me has that kind of perverted duality between innocent childhood and adult perversion. I think something darker (like Leigh's entry) is less 'enchanted' for me than it is 'mysterious', 'magical' etc.
I know its just word nitpicking, but I surprised myself with the 'suggestive' element of it. Creeped up from inside, so to speak.
And you're right. I'm working on the fur as we speak. (As well as the pose.)
visualboo: I think of Stuart, too - now that you mention him. With in the realms of cartoonish realism, I think, a mouse will remain a mouse. But once I get the guy filled with personality, I think he won't look anything more than a distant cousin ;-)

At the very very tippy top of the web page you will see a button that is part of the frame around the orange banner, it says "profile".
Click on that, then in the new page click on the tab that says "edit options". On That new page scroll down to the botom and you can change your avatar.

I have a habit of eating desert before dinner - in case any of you were wondering why I jump in and do the mouse before anything else is even started ;-)
So, here I've backpeddled and done step 1. If you're wondering why heRo's eyes suddenly close, well - put it down to stupidity - I deleted the morph target - not good.
Anyway, here's the gif. BTW let me know if these gifs are interesting or if they're just bulky.

Also, I finally had some time to cruise more of the entries: 2D as well as 3D. All I can say is: hot damn!

Dober, I like your gifs. I think having the steps animated sort of shows the workflow more effectivly than posting a long series of pics with lenghy explanations for each. With the gifs you can see what was done and when. If anyone asks you could always post a higher-res still for details.
It sounds like you have gotten a bit of my luck. Don't you just love it when you delete or loose something you REALLY didn't want to loose and do over. :p

Jumping around alot here, cause I'm doing this literally during free moments. Here's a gif of the faerie in progress.
I just started doing it and its coming out like Max Parrish (or whatever his name was). I'm not sure if I like it like this right now - too heavy for a faerie, but then - that might be nice to have a very traditional faerie...http://www.stickman.de/content/gallery/G_wip/pics/enchanted/faerieBau.gif

Yeah, there's alot I'm unsure about right now.
She's looking so traditional right now that I'm still thinking about how to get the wings attatched at all. "Cover 'em up with leaves", was my first thought, but then I started thinking about exoskeletal platelets or something. That would speak for the little balnce wings like flies have.
Really like your approach btw, Grant: even thought about changing my fly wings to dragonfly wings...

For the most part your fairy looks fantastic!!! What a goregous render you got there. You're definetly doing something right :D I agree about the hips being a bit too narrow. Also I'd either make the single wings a teeny bit longer/larger or I'd add in secondary winglets. Right now the proportion of the wings to the body seems just a bit off.
I have decided I want to be you when I grow up :p

Wait til I git home, everyone! I've got a nice update,
your feedback has been very helpful:
- the hips are back to 'big-ol-butt' status!! Kate Moss adeiu!!
(and Pearson, thanks for spicing up this thread :scream: )
- the thighs are thicker, too
- 'big-'ol-butt' means bigger wings ;-)
- gave her a vmap, yes - she has dark nipples!!

ooooohhhhhhh mmmmaaaaaaaannnnnn.......
That is a great texturing job. It looks so realistic. I really hate these low res requirements...is the pixie blinking as she spins away from the camera? I can't make out any of the details of her face with that pic. What I can make out I love. The modeling looks great, the proportion is fantastic, the textures seem right on. I guess I'm just a glutton in wanting to see some more closeup stills to get some details.

Hi everyone - and thanks for the comments.
Hope to get some of the pose and detail work done soon.
ZrO-1: she's kind of surprised/irritated, the one in the background is alarmed
Iguinix: The faerie really isn't modelled for close-ups, hehe
pearson: your robot is great!
KOryH: I hope the shading / composition works as well as your piece in the end! 3D is a pitfall in that way- its a lot easier to just swab a lighter element in somewhere just because you need it there and then decide what it is and do details...
Damn...
This is shaping up far too well for my liking!
Forget winning, it's going to be a bitch to vote on this challenge!

Sir_Manfred: various picures I've collected, but nothing concrete. Those wenches from pearson definitely helped with the hips.
AJ_23: I don't even dream of winning this one - too much quality from all kinds of directions. To be honest, I think the concept on mine is too standard to hold against some of the more daring pieces.
But its fun, I'm with it - and I want in on the cgGallery!!!!
PedramL: Yeah, he's got a wunderbare wonderbra! It's stuffed in his enchanted jockstrap and full o' dutch cheese. (Somebody stop me. But not Leigh ;-)

Very cool bro! But on the next pic I'd have the ground colored differently. In that last pic (I know its a WIP) the ground and mouse textures became so close in the JPEG compression that the mouse almost seems transparent. Other than that it's really looking friggin awesome. It's staying extreemly true to the original sketch and it's looking really great.

Was it just me, or did anyone else notice the Fairie being reflected in the background plate??
btw - this is awesome work - something I only aspire to do at this time.

LOL! hey Winged-cat, thet's not a reflection. If you take a look at the concept sketches at the begining of the thread you'll see that there are two fairies in the piece. hehehe silly cat :p :D

WHOOPS... yes looking back at the concept art I do see the other Fairie (with the '!') - It hadn't shown up yet in the progression, I totally forgot about it.
Guess I thought it was a little EasterEgg type thingy... 'surprise'... oh well... I'm sure it will start looking more distinct as the wonderful modeling job continues...
(also, a larger image <wink wink> would show the differences in poses better...)

Don't think I love the ground texture or anything. I'm afraid I won't be able to patch things up that much before the challenge ends, but now the 2nd faerie is lit (a bit) hehe...
Next in line is the faeries: styling, doo etc. That's the biggest gap. These challenges are fun, but I really need a vacation to be able to participate like I'd want to...

Well whether or not you have the time, I think you're creating a fantastic image. Though I do agree that the ground's texturing could use some work. When was the last time you took a look at your original sketch? To me it suggested that the foreground was shadowed and the background was lit. I don't know where I'm going with that, except maybe you can get some inspiration for texturing the ground from the sketch. What's wrong with grass?
Anyway it looks gorgeous especially the faeries. And I just want to thank you again dobermunk, your method of modelling helped alot.

So funny. Your sense of humor is absolutely wonderful.
And the expression on his face. HAHA. I think you could get freudian for less.

Your final image should be a GIF also. Just use those animating blinking eyes on the hamster's face, but make the rest of the pic static. Way to go Dober!!!

Great job, some DOF will ceratinly help and maybe hide that ground - providing some nice layering. Can't wait to see the dames with some hair!
see you,
