View Full Version : Character:Head modelling exercise
Rivendale 10-02-2003, 03:13 AM Hi, here are some renders of a head-model I've been working on for a while. It was like an exercise for me and I learned a lot from it. I tried hard to keep the mesh as clean as possible.
Comments and crits are welcome.
EDIT: please scroll down for other variations...:)

modelled in MAX5, rendered in Brazil. Backround photo taken by Jan Andersson(CarlWahl).

This is good. There's not much you can improve on other then the ears. I especially like the eyes, they've got so much life in them. I guess the quality of the rest of the head is so high that it just makes the ears stick out like a sore thumb.

Nice renders! The lighting works really well :)
I find your wireframe really fascinating - the way you've modelled the forehead is a method I've not seen before. Is there any particular reason why the polys form that group in the middle? What sort of deformation does that allow?
I agree that the ears could do with a bit of improving, their texture should also be a bit shinier and a tad more translucent.
Texturing looks nice, although the shading is a little hard. His skin also looks like it's in serious need of some Nivea cream! :D
Did you use photographs within the textures? The eyebrows look photographic (which actually works really well).
The lips remind me of Thirdeye's model he did some months back, especially in the first render.
Cool stuff :)
So you finally posted man, that's great! And it looks good my friend.
I can't give you much critique since I've stared at this too long over the last week to be objective about it. The ear thing that the_hand mentioned looks like a valid point to improve on though.
Also, the BG is pretty well crafted he he :D

Very well modeled indeed. The only thing that bothers me is the light. More sharp shadows will make the imoressions stronger I think.

Wow ... I am trying to a model like yours but I am far from your result ! The eyes are really well done ... and the mapping pretty accurate
wow! really nice head but i have to agree with the_hand, the ears is the "worst" thing on that model

Agree for the ear :)
What is your lightning setup? HDRI?, classic lighning, GI no GI ?
have you used Brazil skin shader? or some SSS?
Otherwise this is well done :)

Thanks a lot for the comments!
Why does the ears look like that? Genetics man, he can't help it
;) . Your comments on the ears are valid though and maybe if I do a future version I will fix it, thanks.
Leigh- Thanks, there's not any particular reason for the forehead topology in regards to animation since I never planned to animate this character, but I've kept it clean though so it should be good if I wanted to. The forehead is the only place where there are polys with more than four sides, but it's in a place where it doesn't matter anyway.
The textures are a mix of photos and a lot of painting in Photoshop. So the eyebrows are bumped textures only. I was thinking of using a hair plugin for it but decided I could get away with using textures for it. The hair on the sides are made with Shag: hair though.
CarlWahl- Thanks friend, your feedback and everybody else's along the way of creation really helped me to improve.
Thanks all!:D

Kel Solaar- thanks, for the lighting I used a portion of Brazil skylight mixed with an arealight and a lot of omnilights. No HDRI on this. The shader for the skin was the Brazil standard material with a translucency map for the SSS. Then I had maps for diffuse, bump, specular level and glossiness as well as some additional maps for the hair.

You can't say much about this work of art, it's perfect. The only thing is the ears, as said earlier, but thats it. The ears look to flat, I'd just try and make the valleys of the ear much deeper and then they would look fine. Great job!

well it is a beautiful model. there is nothing wrong whit it at first glance...well yeah the ear jumps out as less good...but thats been sad already
however looking at the model longer I think the shading and texturing and maybe even the modeling is to clean
the face is to semetrical, the highlights on the face to artificial, the texture of the clothing to bland.
I don't mean to piss you off I just think that whit some effort you can make this model better then beautiful, you could make it excellent!

Very very nice, i love the modifications you made to the basic head, i haven't read all the comments so maybe it's already been mentioned: are the textures hand painted or you started from photos? Can we seem them? Thanks :)

Awesome work :). I loved the original head, and the deformations you've tried out are great, too. It's too bad you're not chaning the ears, because I think that would make it a perfect model. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Whoa, everybody's giving me a hard time about the ears. Might have to rerender it then later.;) Thanks for the comments!
Colin de bink- thanks for the good crits
ThirdEye_01- The textures are based on a photo, but I did a lot of painting too on top of that.

i love the model, its great, (as well as the deformations hehe)
but i may be the only one in saying that, the model seems to have very little life.
as if from a movie, its some atomiton, or lifeless vessel waiting for a host.
model is believable, minus the ear as many have mentioned, and a bit of the symmetry (around the lips in particular)
but other then that, its lovely, damn fine material :-)
btw, im gonna steal that hat and walk around town w/ it, cus that hats dope ;o
<3
good work

I have no problem with the ears. So what if they are weird? I've seen much stranger ears in real life.

I really like this version the best:
http://members.chello.se/mille0/bbb.jpg
Unlike the other mods, which look like charicatures, this one looks like an honest to gosh average everday normal looking person.
It is rare to see non-cartoon/non-babe/non-stud realistic looking heads.

These are some ludacris heads... so good. what software are you using (and what renderer) because these look great, only thing is the UV's streth when you deform the head, so, the first version had the best textures (least amount of stretching) but you sure could make a variety of awesome characters with your method..... by the way, what is your method? lattice's?
Cheers,

wow next time i hear people arguing over whether or not you can use a standard mesh to get lots of different types of characters, i will definitely have to stop and remember this thread. nice work.
[edit: by the way when you're modifying these, are you using dragging verts with soft selection or some other method. just curious]
Rivendale
10-11-2003, 05:33 AM
Thanks!
The method I used for the variations was that I usually started playing with different modifiers like bend, taper, ripple and noise until I picked up on a look I liked. Then I added Freeform deform boxes(lattices) and edited the general shape. Then there was some additional pulling of vertices and editing of the mesh. After I rendered there were heavy touchups in Photoshop too for color and texturemodification.

Rivendale,
Very well done...all of them. You show good mastery of your apps.
In regard to the skin, it looks to be showing some SSS. Is this due to the material you are using? Or is it just effect from the photo textures used?
Any way i could get that skin texture if it is truly SSS?:D I am guessing the answer is no...
Well Done!
