View Full Version : Character: Elf Ranger - Female
Akumu 10-02-2003, 02:37 AM Ok, probably everyone has done one of these in the progress of character modeling, but I did mine because I needed an Elf for a project I'm working on, and I figured why not do a female. She's far from being done, as I intend to change the model quite a bit before I'm ready to unwrap (add more armor/clothing). Plus I wanted to get an anatomy check, and see what feedback I could get. I started out with the body template by working on the Joan of Arc tutorial, but stopped doing that tutorial after I got the body and face done, and began changing her for my purposes. C&C appreciated!

And the last update I think. I fixed her heel postion (more under the butt like they should be). Lowered her breast size and fixed a few other curves for better realisim (still a barbie doll, i know). I know I know, not much changed, but I think I'm happy with her. I think I found out how to unwrap faster too, so skinning should be quicker! :D

Looking good.
But since I presume you posted to receive crits, here goes:
-I think you should move her pelvis a bit forwards
-You should be able to remove some polys with a little thought. Shin and stomach comes to mind. Her back might also benefit from poly-removal.
-Maybe you should rethink the open front on her dress. Unless she's wearing armor or particularly thick clothing, the texture is probably enough.
-Standard procedure when producing elf rangers is to make them half-starved waifs. Her upper inside thighs are not consistent with this maxim. However, for a more naturalistic physique, they're fine (but then you need to modify the rest of her somewhat to match.)

jean of arc anyone? sorry, but def repose her when you get the chance. many people have seen that tutorial, and you dont want it to be extremely recognizable as being made off of a tutorial. then again you might, but just some friendly advice

Man, I'm sorry guys, for all the updates without even having any comments! But I kept feeling inspired, so I added some gear. I hope I can call this done now. C&C still welcome though, since I have another model to unwrap before this one.

I just saw your comments Raman and I DO appreciate the feedback! I like your suggestions, as I hate using this many polies. But I'm wondering if I can do that without sacrificing her curves? I kinda like those and she's headed for UT2k3, and from what I understand it supports up to 3500 tri, which I'm still under.
As far as the waifish look, I hate the stereo type for Elves. I mean, I know a lot of fantasy games make them out that way, but in my mind, that’s not how they look. So with that in mind, what areas were you talking about making a little thicker, to match her mid-section? The arms maybe?
The open cut dress... Hum. I thought about making the whole bathing suite like garb, just be textured. But doesn't the seam really make it stand out? I'm new at modeling, so I guess if I can get away with just using a bump map or something to trick the seam, then I should really peruse that. But it seems like the seam really works there. Or are you saying just get rid of the open cut in the chest, and not the rest of the suite?

I already said that I started the body from the Jone of Arc tutorial. I was brand new to modeling (and still am, as i've only been doing this a few months). I followed the tutorial to build the legs, and face, but gave up when it wasn't really helping, and started doing other things. So I just kept that model around to play with the anatomy. I started building a whole new female, and then figured since I already, had a good female body started, I might as well use it. So I spent like 3 hours removing segments, and changing it for a game purpose.
I know its still obvious its from the that Jone of arc tutorial (everyone raves about how great it is!), but at this point I don't care. I'll build more female models later, its just that I'm in a learning frenzy right now, and I don't mind cutting a few corners where I can. But I do appreciate your suggestion, as eventually I don't want to just have a barrowed style. :)

sorry, my fault for not reading further into your post. to make this easier to view, could you turn your old images into links instead of making them come up? they are very similar and most people wont want to scroll down thru 8 images

I think you did a very good job with the curves, particularly on the lower body. Her butt and thighs are to my mind perfect as they are.
But other areas don't need the same level of detail. In my own models I always make the front of the shin from a bare minimum of polygons. It is a rather flat area after all. Same with the stomach and back.
And yes, I have to agree: Curvacious elves have been underrepresented in fantasy. I think the best thing you can do to get a bit more balance is to simply scale up the entire upper body a little.
I didn't notice the other seams first time around (which might suggest they're superfluous) but of course it depends on your texture.
Looking forward to seeing the textured version!
