I am rendering a 1024 x 768 single frame image of a boy on a hill, He has about 900 000 polygons for hair (I want it to look realistic and I needed to convert to polygons from shave) and I have about a million polygons in the grass hill that he is standing on. The boy is no small poly count either, but nothing super rediculous....

I have the radiosity difuse depth set to 2, and I have the whole scene surrounded but a sun coloured ball..

(with these radiosity settings, and no hair or grass in the scene.. I would have expected to wait about 2 days)

Im on a 500mHz / 310Mb ram iMac (keep in mind thats not as slow as a 500mHz PC) But its definately a less than desireable machine for CGI

anyway.. I have been watching the picture viewer say "preparing" for about 24 hours now.

based on what you know and you Cinema 4D experiance, would you say..

I have crashed if I have been seeing "preparing" for about 24 hours?

I shouldnt have to wait much longer before rendering will begin ?

or has my wait only just begun  ?

I dont mind if it takes a week... I just dont want to wait a week to find out its crashed and I ve wasted all that time. I can get into other applications and quit them (photoshop etc) but I am unable to move the picture viewer window or get back to even look at the editor window. (is that normal for the cinema while the picture viewer is preparing ??) I ve waited so long already.. I really dont want to force quit the application if I have already sat through 1/2 the wait.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINION!!!

expecting that to render with radiosity is insane even on a fast machine, and probably unneccessary, you could most likely get the similar or better results by lighting it manually with omni lights, even if it took a few hours to set up, it's better than waiting a week for 1 frame :surprised
if it's been on preparing scene for 24 hours I'd say it's crashed, either that or you'll eventually get an out of memory message :)

All I can say is that you are very brave :)

No, seriously do what Squidinc has said. Even on the fastest
PC or Mac this is insane.

Well C4D (barely) runs on my G3 333mhz iMac w/ 160mb ram and i found out pretty quickly what it could or could'nt handle, i got it down to the rule of " if it says preparing for longer than an hour and if it makes your HD sound like it's going to die any second then it's best to not try that anymore"...

I'm not too bothered about the slow speed on mine right now as i'm only still learning the modelling side of it but i'll have to get something better eventually because i want to start animating soon and, well, i dont think the iMac's going to let me do that.... ;)

I'd say it hasn't crashed yet, but it's going to eventually. Stop the madness.

I recommend using a system with 2 Gig of RAM for scenes like that, otherwise swapping will increase computing times insanely. The processorspeed is nearly meaningless given that the comparably ultraslow harddisk is making up for RAM big time here.
In the end for scenes like this the current state of the Art systems are just what you want to use anything else will end in frustration ;)

An extra word of caution here, I use a 400MHz iMac and I recently increased my RAM from320MB to 768MB and it's made hardly any difference in 3d apps. The processor etc is just too slow to make use of the extra RAM.
So think carefully before you pay for any upgrades to help a machine which just isn't that suited to 3d :o(
On a brighter note, Wolf359 does superb animation on his aging G3, but ya gotta keep the poly count down and otherwise optimise the render times.
Another thought, are you running OS9 or X? Because Cinema runs much more efficiently on X! - Baz

look at this site. (cinema 4d)
This artist don't use radiosity and you can see the results, there you can find a tutorial fore lighting

quite honestly I would look around and see if you know anyone who has a fast machine that you can borrow.

The big studios don't use radiosity very often for a reason and its a good one. If they did the deadlines they have to meet would go up in smoke compltely.

Like brent turbo once said. "You have to fake like mili vinili " or whatever that band is called.
