View Full Version : Stills: fashion parade
Hi fellows.
it've been busy those lasts months, working on a 5min animation, for a virtual fashion parade. It's now over, and the video has been running for 5 days on a Parisian exhibition. No complains since now ;)
The job started by character design. I had to create 10 models, based on real dimensions (20 to 25 per character) in order to create a tool for both textile industries and "fashion creators" to work with... am i clear?
Those characters had to be light, because of the CLOTH simulations. workflow workflow workflow. None of them is up to to 7000 quads.
After a first validation on those characters, i created a basic rig to import Mo'Cap. That was my first use of mocap since i left 3dsMax for Maya, and i started crying. After many tests i decided to work with MotionBuilder.
I took a few days to train (i'd like to thank again Yang-Hai Eakes, from Motion Builder support for his precious explanations). Then, i ordered moCap files and integrated the whole stuff so the CNNITH team could work on CLOTHS simulations.
While they were working on those simulations, i started the animatic.
I created a scenography, and suggested a non realistic rendering for all the elements (character and room) except CLOTH, which were our main subject in here.
I tested TOMCAT, and mixed it with homemade textures and a post process that would have make me go crazy if i wasn't already insane ;)
So this is it. I can't show you the full movie because of copyrights, but you may find a 1 min video extract on the following link:
www.e338.com/mocnnith.htm
it's a kind of making of, that explains some of the compositing steps. those explanations are in french but pictures are here to help. i'll translate it asap.
i hope you'll like it as much as i enjoyed working on this project.
See ya

I could not see anything in your link either, but the images you posted are really great. Your aesthetic is really refreshing. You have given a fine art feel to a commercial venture.
Very Nice!

Your work is so beautiful.... Great concept & environment.
hi!
thanks first, i'm glad you liked.
For the link, i don't understand. It seems to work here.
It might be a bit long to load, because of my high knowledge of webdesign ;) pfff!!!!
There is also a big white page that launches a popup.
The making of is in the popup. It might have been stacked behind the other page... no? You must configure your browser so it accepts popUps.
If not, try with the following link for the video:

nuclear war, on the dancefloor
you're a pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty girl,
you're a pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty girl - on the dancefloor!
uhm... xcuse me. singing out loud...
ok. right ... would say doc Evil...
well, what's happening in here? Yes, for sure, i did not mention "comments & critics" but that's obvious on a forum... am i wrong?
Yeah, even critics! i mean, i won't work back on it, the job is over; but it would have been interresting to know what you like or dislike on those images.
Oh yeah it's not LOTR based stuff (though i think LOTR is one of the best and impressive thing we've ever been given to see), and not mangalike stuff either but does it deserve to .. be... snubed?
Don't be scared, i won't piss you off too long with my job fellows, i was just curious... i just keep it in front page for about 24hours, time for anyone to have a "chance" to look at it, and then, pfff
i'll be gone.
As i'm a friendly guy, here's my playlist for tonight.
Electronicat, 21st century toy (really cool and eclectic),
Fat Truckers Album (specialy "Anorexic robot" and the funny "teenage daughter" track)
Add'n to X, Loud like Nature (easy transition)
T.raumschmiere, Radio blackout
a short rock'n roll break with Captain BeefHeart, "Making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee"
BACK ORPHEUS, Keziah Johns (what a groove)
Then, jump to BLUR, with their "Think Tank" album, not so bad, even if graham coxon left the band (he's one cool cat).
then go a bit further with our Brit' friends, Radiohead's"Myxomatosis" (i also feel like a sick rabbit with you kids)
I leave you the choice for the next album and my advice is to put the last Tosca album (Dehli 9) when you feel ready to go to bed with your girlfriend (Caroline, sweet babe, i kiss you).
see ya

So is electric six not on the play list? Thought for sure it would be. Saw them recently with D4 and it was a good show.
It does seem hard to get people interested in work outside the fantasy/scifi realm, but it's worth trying.
My comment other than just generally liking the style a lot, would be that the faces seem stylised in a way that seems inconsistent with the bodies. The mouths seems very exaggerated compared to much more realistically rendered bodies. Hopefully I can get that link to work soon so I can see your making of.
As for music-check out this site: www.lotsofnoise.com
it is a local site music site, but there are some good music discussions that happen on the forum.
Anyhow, cheers-cool work!

you enlight my night Jennbot.
i should have add Electric six in the playlist, for sure :) They're kinda funny.
For the faces, i stylized'em quiet hard that's true, but most of the time they're far from the camera. that's why i used some kind of sharp makeup (just like in fashion parade in fact, you see, those acrylic makeUp girls have?).
With a little bit more time, i would have created variations for those makeUp.
While i was working on the cameras, i asked a friend to make some blinks when it was usefull. You might not see it in the video on my website, but it gives a little bit of life on those faces.
Next time, i'll go further.
i go and check this lotsofnoise link.
cheers:beer:
Awesome work again man, thanks for the link i think it looks great... on my laptop and the quicktime link is working but isnt showing for some reason?!? ill check it when im back in the studio...
cool stuff though very nice, was just about to start a thread on some fashion stuff so its helpful-how long did you say it took by the way?
 :applause:

hi
it took me about 1.5 months to create the 10 characters and make the rigging stuff.
5 days of researches on scenography, render.
10 days of tests and extra on MotionBuilder
and 2.5 months to make the video. (That means integration of the characters, integration of clothes, rendering, compositing, editing).
It was a kinda repetitive task, as each time the same (or almost) scene was used, but the compositing had slight variations.
what's your fashion stuff Cuse? what are you workin' on?

exceptional. has a really innovative and unique style, which is not something you see every day in 3d work! thanks for sharing
one question about the modelling.. the big girl.. her hips seem all wrong somehow, as in far too wide in terms of the placement of the hip joints.. shes fat, her actual pelvis wont get any bigger because of that.
Shaun
Its a fashion designers site, cant say anything on this thread but i can in PM.
Ill post a thread on the stuff im looking to create anyway but i think i might be needing your experience in the subject ;)
