View Full Version : photo-composition test (conceptcar)
handige_harrie 10-01-2003, 09:12 PM My same car again . Working on an animation with Daan (shademaster) and for some in-action shots we decided upon photo-composition.
I did a still first. Took a lot of tweaking and multiple passes but I am pretty happy with the result.
http://www.shademaster.nl/peter/concar-photo-comp02.jpg
The original photo was 506x337 so it is blurry at this resolution.
Used:
-DOF
-Lens effects
-1 ambient light for background
-1 distant light for sunlight
Had to:
-get the camera's FOV right (imo the hardest part in the beginning)
-build the geometry from the photo
-get the light in the exact position (which was a pain in the *ss as rotation in c4d doesn't work the way I wanted)
-render a separate shadow pass and multiply it in photoshop to get the shadow on the ground dark and even.
-use this image as background
-render the background with DOF
-use this image as background
No radiosity, rendertime of under 2mins :) for a model of > 3k poly's.
If anyone is happy to share some thought or experiences.
Be happy to ask for more details and/or settings :)
Oh and the car is black and supposed to be dark.

Matched the light and geometry pretty good I think.
I dunno dude this just seems to be lacking depth.
No that I don;t love it mind you but its kinda 2D almost that big comp you made. Its just not really all 3D lookin if you ask me.

Of course I am biased but I don't have this 2D feeling when I look at it :hmm:
You have to give me more specific comment, because with just this I don't know how to improve
Maybe it's the lensflare?

I think because you blurred the background to much I cant put my finger on it. maybe the perspective the two pictures without the car seem to be good but you altered the picture some way that changes its depth. kinda pixilated to but the 2 test pictures look great.

I like the way it turned out, only thing that needs work in my opinion is the front tyre, it seems to luminant. Maybe some ao would do the trick??

hmm i think i know how to improve some things
-sharper and more acurate shadow of the car on the floor
-less dof
-ao-pass
and i'll show you a render without the lensflare so you can compare.

Image looks nice, but (and no offense intended) whats the purpose of a concept car render, isn't it to show off the car? I can't see the car verywell except its silhouette.

This shot is just a small part of an animation with mostly 'showroom-like' cuts (check the wip topic, i posted there). This shot isn't supposed to show off the car, it just has to look cool. If I want to show more of the car I'll give it a white carpaint :).
Besides that it is mainly a test in photo-composition techniques.

Update:
http://www.shademaster.nl/peter/concar-photo-comp03.jpg
I changed quite a lot and used low-quality radiosity this time.
Still not happy with the background quality.
Feedback wanted :).

i like the idea of it all...a nice touch imho is on that last image the light from the skylight falls on the car and floor with the rest of car dark...like that touch.
but the quality is really grainy...not read all posted so don't be offended if you already mentioned you fixed..maybe web compression doesn't help either...maybe the background pic problem..i don't know i'm just confused at the moment...ignore me..rough day.

Had to use alpha mapping in PS to get the background right.
Damn that's annoying and unlogical :annoyed:.
But it turned out quite nice. Any way, I really really can't make a 506x337 image look better at 1024x683 than this .
I'll link the previous images so people don't have to load hundreds of kb's at once.
Again: more feedback wanted :wavey:.
its possible that what is bugging me is your high ceiling. I mean you have like 1/4 of the image as car centered. The rest is kinda unfocused back ground stuff.
I think its possbile you could crop this image, at the same time still achieving the same results. You might get a much clearer picture in my opinion.
Also this thing is mega dark. Not to many car pics are dark. an animation would add life to this but its radiosity and we all know what would happen if you tried, thusly frying your poor processor.
summed up; 1 the general darkness, 2 the general lack of a real focal point.
Its still quite a nice peice of work.
Its looking better.

I could crop the image and indeed get a sharper result, but even 512x384 means scaling up the background and loss of car-details. I like this better ;).
The darkness and lack of focal point are really beyond my reach of fixing. Both points are photographic "errors" you might say. I would not know how to change the POV or get a lighter image (without spoiling the credibility or atmosphere).

I like it Harrie. I would tone it not so blue but that is only a
question of taste. Maybe you could strenghten the DOF on
the car. I would place the back of DOF a tick in direction of
the camera. I think the back of the car is too sharp.
Still a nice image and a great model

considering the brightness of the sky light it should be a much brighter reflection on the car. just set it to multiply and bring the brightness up a few notches, i think that would help to place the car within the environment a little bit better. but keep going, it's improving all the time :)
