Hi everyone.
I've rescued an old model, tuning proportions and generally improving the presentation.
I hope you like it, and please send your comments so I can learn more.

Thanks.

That's a great character - your textures are exceptionally well painted :)

My only real crit is to do with the shading - it could do with a little translucency I think. Right now the blue one is looking a little like wet stone, while the fleshy coloured one looks a tad metallic - basically the shading is looking a little hard. A higher degree of translucency (and maybe even subsurface scattering if your software supports it) would soften it :)

The metal (is it metal?) texturing of his clothing looks really cool.

I checked out your website - your work is really awesome!

Eh..is it me, or am i the only one who is having flashbacks...?

Wow! Very well done!
The texture is really good, only crit would be that the vein on his forehead is a bit too thin.
His eyes have a great expression, eventhough he lacks some eyelashes

Keep it up!

When I first saw the initial post for this character bust, I thought it was the most accurate representation of lifelike skin that I had seen to date, and nothing posted since then has changed my mind.

I think Oscar has captured the qualities of a warm-blooded creature here better than any other CG character... I'm still trying to figure out how much or how little can be attributed to Brazil's SSS.

My emails directly to you Oscar seemed to get lost in translation, so if have any pointers on working with your renderer, that would be awesome.

In terms of these particular renders, it appears you've done some tweaking of the lips and nostrils, as well as a backdrop (bottom picture)... and added some depth-of-field blurring.

I'm so used to looking at the old picture that the blurring seems a bit overdone, but that is probably just my skewed perspective.

The eyes have always been far and away the most realistic I've ever seen from this viewing distance.

Anyway, great job Oscar, that is the work of a true master... share the knowledge!

Nope I'm having them too. But I really can't remember where I've seen something like this before. What I do remember though is me critting the nose... specularity is a little high there, and I agree with leigh about the translucency thing.

Furthermore I think with the blue one the greens and blues below the eyes are a little out of place.

But, overall, very good work :applause:

Thanks for all your comments!

I think it would be great if you could take this model and modify the project in any way you can think of.
That way we could see what different ways there are to use the same model.
You could try changing maps, alter the lighting, etc.

its really nice and the model is great too but my only crit is regarding the lighting. the 2nd image his face has a bit high reflectivity, if you look at the bottom lip his nose youll realize that the reflected light is a bit high unless he is coverd with sweat,, thats what i think but other than that its amazing ..great work man

Devilsnok, maybe your friend could translate a couple questions... feel free to post replies in Spanish, I'm sure someone here would be happy to translate for you.

It looks like you opted for a Brazil basic material using a translucency map as opposed to using Brazil's wax material with built-in SSS features. Why did you decide to go this route out of curiosity?

Also, with your translucency map, do you need to specify a color someplace to define what actually shows through?

Thanks,

Really awesome bit of work. It's the first time I see a living soul
behind the eyes of a 3D creature - I'm getting goosebumps
looking at it.

I agree with Leigh about the wet stone look on the blue one but I also think
the other one looks a bit oily - perhaps beads of sweat would be in order.
Or vary the wet/oil areas.

BTW, the link to your files didn't work for me. And on your web page
the middle fantasy pic opened in a really tiny box - not the right size.

Can't wait to see more!

Its about this model. I'm looking for different ways to work with translucent materials, specially for the skin. I'm also thinking about works in a new aproach to the overall lighting in the scene....Any suggestions??

Doubt

Have you tried using Brazil's wax material for the skin at all? I was thinking all along by looking at your piece that you were already using it, but apparently not.

I haven't done much with translucency maps so far, but I'm trying some stuff now with my character. I'm not grasping how exactly the translucency map affects the material during render though. It seems like it only really lightens that shadow areas a bit, and even an extremely contrasty translucency map doesn't seem to have that much effect on things.

I would guess that the translucency channel would require some sort of color to be defined... so the map has something specified to show through... but by looking at a max raytrace material and a brazil standard material.. that doesn't seem to be the case.

Can anyone else shed some light on how exactly the translucency channel works?
