Cinema 4D contest at Renderosity.com!

Today, October 1st, we launched a new Cinema 4D contest at Renderosity.com entitled "Biomechanical monsters". In the future, classical monsters like werewolves, vampires, mummys and trolls are truly a thing of the past. The monsters in the future are biomechanically enhanced in various ways - part organic, part mechanic and equipped with devices like hydraulic claws, mechanical arms, biomechanical armour, infrared sensors, and so on.

The task in this contest is to create your vision of a biomechanical monster. Try to be as unique and creative as possible. This creature must be visibly organic in appearance but the biomechanical enhancements should be a major part of it. The monster should appear in an environment and be posed in some way (i.e. not the Da Vinci-stance). The final image must depict at least ¾ of the complete monster and this means no close-ups of just a face or a claw – the monster should be clearly visible.

First prize: a $1000 Maxon voucher + Paul Everett's plugin "Visual Selector".
Second prize: Paul Everett's "Power Pack", €240 worth of Cinema 4D plugins.
Third prize: Samir Kharchi's "DPack Complete 2" + Paul Everett's "Visual Selector".

The contest starts October 1st and ends November 1st. In order to participate you have to be a member of Renderosity.com (membership is free). More info can be found at the contest page (http://www.renderosity.com/contest.ez?contest_id=239).

Must join. Want to win Voucher. Need BP2 and some other goodies. Huuuaaaaaa.

The guys over there choose a very nice theme. hmm i have no idea what to do but there will be something i can model.

One question though: Modeling challenge or also textures and lighting and rigging?

If it comes to more than modeling then i will see some big problems between me and my voucher:)!

Mmmmm..... $1000 voucher....

Must come up with a concept.... Fortunately, I need a biomech monster for my short, so this really couldn't come at a better time!

But I need to sign up with renderosity... hmm... isn't that like, a bit, you know, umm....

time to give up... squidinc just joined :D

I wonder if this has to be photo realistic, or if it can be on the cartoonish side ?

squidinc

does it have to be one creature, or can there be a large number of them on screen?

JamesMK

I can't really tell by that rules page if you are supposed to enter anything at all except for the final image?

The way I understand it now, you basically just shut up until everything is done. Is this correct, or am I supposed to post some sort of concept/story to signal the fact that I'm in?

yup, no WIPs on renderosity or anywhere else ( this way is best I think, it removes all possibility of copying, the only way results with look the same is by pure coincidence )

Your probally right that squid will win, but as long as I'm around I'm going to do my best to give him a run for his money :p.

Yeah I'm calling you the best squid for now, lol well see :) grrrrrr....

Oh and I noticed in alot of your work squidinc there are flaws that severly limit range of motion. And the believability of your robots, the elbow joints in paticular stand out to me.

well looking forward to competing with you all, woot this is a good month for challenges :) go over to c4dportal as well if you havent, they have some nice weekly stuff goin.

Ehm... speaking of contests the challenge forum at C4Dportal
is open. Where are all the challengers now?

The themes are:

weekly challenge - make the best hand you can
monthly challenge - a scifi landscape

JamesMK

Three prizes actually!

Nah, the only reason I'm in is because I need to build me a biomech anyway, so why not submit and hope to win some plugs?

classical monsters like werewolves, vampires, mummys and trolls are truly a thing of the past

would classical also include: king kong, dracula, Yeti, etc ??
is that what they mean by classical ? or is it just general monsters

JamesMK

@sebek27 - Just think "avoid anything resembling any kind of monster we've already seen ever"... Basically.

Unfortunately, there's nothing new about biomechanical monsters either - Ever seen a Borg in Star Trek? What about the original Terminator? That aside, it's an intriguing topic - just love that sort of thing!

Greetings, people!

If you have any questions about the contest, please feel free to post them in this thread or drop me a PM. I will try to answer as quickly as I can.

prayas: Modeling challenge or also textures and lighting and rigging?
A: Everything will be taken into account when judging so be just as careful when lighting and texturing as you are in modeling.

sebek27: I wonder if this has to be photo realistic, or if it can be on the cartoonish side ?
A: That is totally up to you. As long as it's a scary biomechanical monster we're happy :)

squidinc: Does it have to be one creature, or can there be a large number of them on screen?
A: You can have as many as you need but no mass scenes a la Lord of the Rings -- the judges should be able to actually see what you have done, to be able to appreciate the skill, so to say :)

JamesMK: Am I supposed to post some sort of concept/story to signal the fact that I'm in?
A: No, there's no need to do anything like that. Submit your entry when it's done, that's all.

sebek27: Would classical also include: king kong, dracula, Yeti, etc ??
A: Sure, but remember that it doesnt have to be classical monsters, it is not a requirement for the contest -- feel free to create your own futuristic nightmare.

Cheers and good luck to everybody who enters!

/Anders

what about a monster being the central figure with other creatures or people nearby that are not monsters, like extra characters for atmosphere?

No problems, as long as focus is on the monster.
