View Full Version : CHARACTER: Baby Bear
bentllama 10-01-2003, 09:51 AM CHARACTER: Baby Bear
http://bentllama.com/cgtalk/bearPoop.jpg
I did this sketch while waiting for a mandatory company Office Install to finish this morning at work...my original thought was a little bear staring at a butterfly...but then it got twisted...Baby Bear in Goldilocks and the 3 Bears...
" Someone's been pooping in my room!"
...with Goldilocks being a stray Golden Retreiver that will just NOT go away... *insert clever mayhem here*
I have been playing around with different short film ideas lately...so many ideas and you can only handle one at a time...
...what do you guys think? Is this a good idea, or should I go with another slapstick one, or one driven on comedy born from panic?
edit: this is my strongest idea so far...but I wanted to get some feedback before I start pre-pro on whatever idea I choose...I do not know why I am so indecisive :)

Heh I think that's as slapsh*t er slapstick as you're going to get there Bent ;) I love the character tho, he's cute. For you short tho, you sure you want it to be a parody?

Haha, you crazy canuck. I like the idea a lot and your sketch is pretty good... but I kind of agree with lil'd with the parody thing tho. I don't think I would mind seeing a parody it's just that I know the story line already. If you have something original then it's completely fresh in my mind when I'm watching it and I have no idea whats going to happen. Ya know?
Cute charater though.

Parody... sort of...
it is kind of a twist on an already known story.
without giving away particulars in the story/setup there will be differences from the regular tale. think of it more as a widely identifiable guideline... everyone knows the base story, but it is the twists and spins you throw in that makes it original, and unexpected...
imagine if you will...
Little red riding hood - red is a raging alchoholic and the wolf a booze salesman
wizard of oz - dorothy is all commando and on a recon mission from delta kansas
romeo and juliet - with vampires and werewolves [oh wait that has been done :)]
I do have other ideas based off of Aesop's fables...and another that is way to serious and would bring me down to even storyboard it...what I am trying to get at is that it is not wrong to base your story off of something the audience can already identify with, and having the audience identify with your characters and read them from a glance is one of the most important things to do...just like the big guy or angular villian stereotype, archetypal familiar storylines are easily read by the audience, and once read you have a better chance of not losing them when you do something completely wacky
I have a few other original ideas that I am still kicking around, so we shall see if this baby bear will ever live soon...
thanks for the feedback guys. please keep it coming.

I see the point of doing something people know but with a serious twist, make them go now this happens but something completely different happens, which of course makes them either laugh or go OOHHH.
but . . . i think you should go with a slightly wider known story imo. it could be me ofcourse being in the unknown, but my knowledge of the story of goldilocks and the 3 bears goes little beyond the fact she eat their porrage.
the sketch is pretty funny tho.
you mind sharing those other ideas you're kicking around. i'm not one for storytelling, but i know a winner when i see one ;)

Bent, I love the idea. I can see some very expressive animation in this and I know you will do a good job as always. I'll keep an eye on this thread from now.

I love the sketch, and the idea, if you don't make it to obvious its a golilocks thing I think it would be even more funny...
I have to 100% disagree with equinoxx, I am hard pressed to think of a better known story than goldilocks and the three bears.
BUT I bet thats just a cultural difference.
can't wait to see more.

see, i allready thought it was my dumbass knowledge of classical tales. could be indeed a matter of geographical location.
You just go with whatever you feel comfy with Nathan :)

cool...I'd like to see more. You should draw 15 of these on a page. It would take much time at all.
hope to see more,

well I've always been partial to the more offensive vein of humor, and I like your ideas. I think the red riding hood/alcoholic one would be awsome, I can see some great stylizations of the characters going on in that one. I like to see original ideas as well, but in some ways it takes even more creativity to re-vamp a well known story than to make up a new one. Making a story that everyone knows into a new, fresh, entertaining short is at least just as challenging IMO.
show me more, cheesebiscuit
If you want to do a short for the fun of it instead of a deep portfoliopiece (and you got a job already ;))I don't know if this is the best. You'd have to animate hair, 4 legs, model poop...:D
I think there are other more fresh ideas that would require less hassle, letting you concentrate on the fun parts which, from what I know about you, is what you REALLY want!
The sketch is funny but it doesn't really show what's going on in your head so I might be way off and you have a really hilarious way of doing it.
I'd go with the comedy born from panic :)

It could have potential, but its hard to say without knowing the whole plot. I think baby bear having a personality like stewie from Family guy could be fun. Maybe give one of them allergies to dogs. Is this going to be animated in 3d or 2d? There arnt enough 2d animations anymore. just my 2 cents.
