View Full Version : Penzoil Nismo
winberg 05-29-2002, 04:18 AM I finally finished one of my "for fun" projects, modelled in 3dsmax using nurms, and rendered in Vray
some minor adjustments in Photoshop..
(aliasing due to "unsharp mask" filter)
I am not entirely happy with the orange part in the rearlights, but it will have to do for now..
Please feel free to post some feedback..

very nice modelling. You got errors on your antialising though, and might wanna make those wheels more interesting. They look cg. bump or model..? It would be nice to see this car in an enviroment....

Winberg, Your attention to details is awesome,
I noticed every seams modeled nicely fits(no CG looking gap, the hard and soft edges looks very natural.
You mention that you model this car using 3dsmax nurms ? , can you explain the short steps that you took from begining up to this point ?, I use lightwave but now I am learning max to broaden my software knowledge, so far the challenge in 3dsmax is that max doesnt have any layers to put all the different parts...
Anyway... Keep the fabulous works

Thanx everybody for feedback..
diazgl: what do you mean wtih wheels look cg, do you mean the tires, the rims?
erwinriau:I whish max had layers too, I can write you a short tutorial, is that ok?
-Tom
Flawless... simply excellent.
The render is a little overly shiny for my personal taste - but the modelling and overall reanders are superb.
Looking at the work on your site, it seems that you are quite an exceptionally talented artist!
How many of the renders on your site are rendered in Vray? And could you give any tips/advice you've picked up in using it?
Once again, outstanding stuff.

clean clean clean!
my only crit would be about the reflection. It has a nice stylized look, but if your going for realism i'd tweak it a bit. ...dont know exactly how.. mabey not have every reflecting line so hard
anyway, NICE work

AJ_23: I would say that about 60% are rendered in vray mabe more, and there are not much difference in making cool things in vray, than Brazil or any other GI renderer...I could probably make something very close too this with max scanline renderer....It would have rendered a lot slower though ;)
trask: I was going for the "studio" look, this is in my opinion usually how they look...look at some printed car commercials
Planning on making some other "environment" renderings too..

Hey Winberg, great job man, very nice modeling! There is a script or plugin called "layer manager" for max, it will give you the layers you guys are looking for! It's free, and can be found here:

Enjoy!

Dang :) Tbonz beat me to it but I would recommend this one.
Layer Manager BETA (http://www.rezn8.com/gearhead/)
Nice script!!
Whats funny about this is that this R34 is my favorite car in GT2 :)
winberg
05-29-2002, 07:12 PM
Hmm, i did know about this layer manager actually.........just havent thought about resently.
Generally I try to keep the plugins count down to a minimum.
And as I said in my first post: the aliasing is due to my overdone "unsharp mask" in photoshop
Original rendersize are 1600*1200, these small images doesnt really do justice to the model...
And it is (was) one of the cars I saved my money for in Gt3 too..(you ment Gt3, right)

but if you are going for the long one all I can say is go for it ;)

naa, GT2 is better IMO. 3 has wayyyy better graphics but the controls completely ****. They're trying to get to realistic and it's taking away from the fun of the game. toooo slowwww.
oh btw... I'd be into a overview of your technique.

sorry, my bad!! When I said the wheels, i meant the tyres. Correct me if i'm wrong, but this is sort of a "nascar" racing car, and wheels are not "flat" -i am assuming-. Dont they need some kind of bump?

Fantastic car, do you have values for your materials, for the ones you use are kickass.
winberg
05-30-2002, 11:10 PM
When it comes to car paint, it is not so much the settings, but more what is reflected that matters.........
The Paint, is a material with a faloff in the reflection slot, and I put a falloff in the diffuse slot too, (shadow/light) to make the yellow a little more orange in the shadows..

Pretty damn awesome. Anyway, at first glance the only thing I noticed was that the roll bars inside the car don't look right. I think you can fix it with lighting, but then again what do I know.

I agree about the tires. They do seem CG. They need to look rougher, even with the studio look your are going after. The rims do seem a bit too shinny, but I do not know the reference you used. I would still tone it done so that everything isn't so shinny.
It is extremly amazing work though.

Så det finnes nordmenn her også?
:wavey:
Very, very nice. Maybe fix the reflection map, and the anti-aliasing.
(The yellow body has a high reflection, but the tires has little).
Very good,

Amazing, I know how hard it is to make a car, let alone texture it and render it. It all looks very nice.
Where did you get all those logos? I'd be super intrested in your mapping technique, and other texturing tips.
What kind of reference did you use?
The tanker on your site looks very nice as well.
That's one awesome model n render you have there.
I was wondering if you had some space, would it be possible to attach that 1600x1200 render img, so some of us can use it as a wallpaper!
thanks

Thanx again for all the compliments, I have the tutorials first thing on my to do list, just have to finish some other stuff here..
I was not perfectly happy with the tires myself, they definetly need some "roughing", I think however that they have the right specularity for this kind of rubber slicks....will check out some more..
I wrote that I wasnt all happy with rear lights glasses..I have fixed it a bit and you can see the result here:
http://www.wide3d.no/temp/lights_new.jpg
just a little detail of one of the renderings...you can see the details of the lights much better here..
If I were to post a 1600x1200 image for wallpaper use, wich one is most wanted?

awesome... no no wait its not awesome its freakin awesome
only thing i noticed were the tires need a little more roughness and "depth" to em but u said your working on it so :bounce:
as far as wallpaper goes i think the one looking at it from the front with it tilted on its side would be pretty tight

First of all, Trick skills on the Skyline, Much appraised. I have but one question to ask that has been troubling me for some time, I have been having the hardest time getting taillights, headlights, marker lights and so forth to look right, matter of fact the solution has evaded me completely, so I am stumped. Now I appears that you had achieved what I have been yondering for, So if it is not too much of a trade secret, would you mind giving me some good tips in how to make lights look real? It could also be a nice addition to your tutorial, I have scoured the net looking for such a publication only to be left empty handed.
Thanks

Hi, I think there is a Russian 3d cars site with some frontlight setup tutorial....Cant remember the url though..
I will include this in my tutorial...
But basicly you need a reflective reflector inside the glass, and a refractive lens with some bumpmaps on the glass bit..
hope this can help you some on the way...

 Wow.... that's breathtaking! I dunno what to say...
I would most surely be VERY interested in that tutorial... I'm quite a newbie too, so any level of detail would be appreciated...
About the lighting, it looks pretty right to me... In fact, it looks perfect! Exactly like a studio-photographed car (MHO)
About the wall paper, any camera will do, but I'd prefer that tilted front view or that wheel view...
About the wireframes, amazing level of detail (look at those wheels!) Could you post a low poly? No, wait... Oh my GOD! That IS low poly!!!! :p

Nicely executed work. I have to render cars for a job, as well as build them in Max and Rhino, and I know how hard they are to do well.
The 2 things that I find are the hardest are the glass and reflective paintwork.
Being ultra pedantic, and constructive, you say the shot is a perceived studio shot, have you tried using Fresnel fall off for the car's main paint work? It will still look reflective, but not overly as someone pointed out. It will mean the paint work becomes more reflective as the surface faces away from you, angle of incidence etc. Also is the paint gloss or lacquered, and do the sponsors have a map for reflection or specular? If not this should add a little more realism.
Overall superb work, that should be an impressive piece in your book!

WoW shit!!!!
Truelly beautifull :) :) :) can we plz see a non textured version of it??? for the modelling detail... i'm curious !!!!
Very nice picture. Some things that made me wonder a bit are:
If you say you're going for the studio look, shouldn't the tires have even more shine? Tire gel / dressing is usually put on studio car pictures to give the tires a shining "wet" look.
Another thing is the wing - doesn't look like it's helping very much in how it looks like it's catching air and directing it underneth instead of above the deck. (or is that just how it's designed?).
Lastly, why are there 2 exhaust points - one on the left side below the "1" decal and one in the rear of the car? (again, designed like so?)
good job
winberg
06-03-2002, 08:17 PM
I will look into the tires, some other things to fix there too..
About the design: I did not design the car, have no idea about the why´s...
