I was for many years a c4d user amongst many other apps, but haven't upgraded c4d since 8.5, although I've put the latest demo versions through their paces. I like c4d for its stability and ability to handle large projects but am not too keen on the render, and obviously the lack of modelling conveniences, hence my use of Modo since 301.
Maxon have shot themselves through the foot with their latest product line and I think they are too pricey anyway especially for casual freelance users and hobbyists, which IMO is where c4d started off. Modo is great for many things that suit me, but not too clever with large scenes and I, like many others hate the shader 'tree'. So the leads me to LW, which I've ordered (9.6).
How does LW handle large scenes? Judging by looking at their gallery, better than Modo. Is there an automatic update to 10 for recent 9.6 buyers?

Who did you purchase it from? Did you buy directly from Newtek? If so, you should have a CORE membership and get 10 as a free upgrade from my understanding. If you purchased from someone else, I would check with them.

Well, I got the software and yes there is a upgrade to 10. All I need now is a dongle....
I hope the rest of my experience with Lightwave is not like this. I installed it and have run it in 'discovery' mode. Luckily a lot of commands are similar to Modo, so not so strange.

Hate to break it to you but... the software doesn't work without the dongle. In fact, the software is "free", you just download it. It is the dongle that unlocks it. If you paid for the software and not the dongle, you got robbed.

Lightwave is pretty easy once you figure it out some of the shortcut keys. Actually modo is based on lightwave so you should find it pretty familiar.

You'll need the dongle to get the full functionality so you'll have to wait till it arrives from some things.

To move the screen around it's like modo use the buttons on the upper right of each viewport. (you can go into the view -> keyboard editor etc to change short cut keys for moving around in a viewport.

You do all your modeling in modeler and then load object in layout, which is where you do your animation and rendering.

you should be able to save out most of your C4D and Modo files to lightwave.
