Tellerve 05-29-2002, 05:17 AM While I'm not entirely new here this is my first challege and I figured since I had been posting in several people's challenges it was time I put something up of mine so people could see what I do and then let me have it or at least take what I say with a grain of salt :)
So here's the initial sketch/thought...

Ok, here's what I have so far. It is already deviating a bit from my initial sketch, but I kinda expect that with myself.

Wow, fast progress! I really like it. I think the only thing I might suggest is to put a tiny bit more "bendy-ness" into the trunks of your trees. I really like the straight up look to them, it's nicely different from a lot of the other trees so far...it's just the all look a bit too similar right now. Awesome work so far though. The modeling itself looks really solid. :applause:

Fist off thanks for being my first critiquer. Second, yeah the trees are a bit straight, and *laughing* that is quite different from a lot of the trees in the challenge so far. I'll see about twistin' them and whatnot but I might just keep them straight and hope for good texture, bump, and displacement maps to help them stand out. The straight non warped tree needs to have representation! hehe.
I have to laugh at myself though when I notice a lot of people have very similar scenes. I'm working on my waterfall right now with xsi's particles (which I like a lot more than Max's) and hopefully that'll be something that'll help me stand out from the others. We'll have to see I guess.

One thing that I think might look neat, which I'm not sure anyone has tried yet for the waterfall is to have it be really streaky. Like in a photo with a long exposure. It would pro'lly add to the realisim of the overall piece. And just to clarify my last post: I like the trees nice and straight like they are. dis-maps are a good idea for adding variety to the trees.

Well, I'll have to see what I can do with the particles. I don't think I'm going to hyper realistic but even so I'll try some motion blur and such to get the streakiness you talk about. I just need to play around some more and I find particles quite a bit of fun just to see flow around and bump off things.

Great idea for the waterfall. My scene also consist of a waterfall and have no idea how I will make it in max but I will approach that problem as I get further along. Great idea and I also like those stright trees. keep up the good work!

 Thanks Adam, yeah Max has all sorts of particle emitters and stuff. Super spray, spray, etc. etc. I never got enough into them to be really proficient without a whole lot of tweaking. But I guess that's what I'm doing now. At any rate, XSI's particles are pretty quick so that helps as well.
My other idea, which has parts of this in it, is to have the scene filled with a lot of pollen, pixie dust, whatever the heck like in the movie Legend with tom cruise. Interestingly my friend just got the special edition DVD. But the whole mood of the movie was just awesome and I thought it would be neat if I could capture that feel, and without the allergies!

Ok, here's some early particle work...gotta hit the bed though as I gotta get to school in a handful of hours and I'm a tired pup.

dave,
i see you every day in 8-1, and yet you still seem to be full of surprises! your environment looks like its off to a solid beginning.
im interested to see what your gonna "mix" up for this. im sure itll be every bit as as environmentally evocative as "the beach"
good luck. . .from 'the post-man'

well well well indeed, thank you very much for the kind words sean_G. I see your not 8-1 today, hmm, up doing your own enchanted forest eh?
Still workin' on what to "mix" into this scene but hopefully I can get it lookin' pretty well. At most it'll be good for me to work on my texturing and effects skills in XSI.

I think what would be real kool if you put mario and his gang in there, i'd ease up on the mushroom size and spread, If that's the only thing that makes that magicla or enchanting, you should really put more thought into it.

Hmm, well no mario for me, although a faerie or several yes. As for being magical and enchanting, well I guess I can't win them all over :p
I kinda like my mushrooms, although I am going to put in my big puff plant will o wisp flowers. Ok, maybe I'll put the puffy plants in later...or composite them in, 'cause how I thought about doing them with XSI's hair brought my system to its knees (ooops!). So, worked a bit more on the water and put in some grass. Not at all final colors, and I'm thinking of having more grass of different colors help break up the coloring. Hmm, what else, ohh the water still needs to get some ripples and some more tweaking.

p.s. Check out the work in the 2d challenge area, awesome stuff!

not bad for a first step on the grass dave, it is coloured, and lit pretty well, but just doesnt transfuse light like grass does yet.
maybe using that transperancy feature on the XSIhair\grass might
work? well talk in class tomorrow, if you want. i know the render time on transperancy mapped hair is costly but its for a still. . .
check you manana way
