View Full Version : Character: 'Theron' demonic darklord
ironikart 10-01-2003, 07:27 AM This is a model I made for a comp on another site (Sumea (http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=790&whichpage=5)). I didn't get to finish up the texture sheet 100% before the comp was due so I'd say the textures are still a work in progress and need a little more attention. The topic was for a demonic darklord and this is what I came up with.
I'd welcome any constructive crit or comments :)
polycount: 3454 tris (limit of 3500)
texture sheet: 512x512
GI rendered (money shot)

that looks great. you achieved a great resemblance to your concept. the only thing that bothers me is the knee (or joint? the one that joins the middle and lower leg) either the calf muscle is too thin, or the joint is too big. i would suggest enlarging where the calf muscle meets the joint. great job though. nice texture work

Id like to see the texture flats...
on the model, the textures look like they could use more contrast, and a bit more intensity. I realize you dont want the dude to glow in the dark, so dont get too carried away with intensity...but a little more will make his textures that much more rich.
Would also be real cool if you brought out the tactility of the skin more...perhaps going for something that looks rough, coarse-calloused...hard
And on the GI rendered shot, I would suggest making the backdrop a lot darker, to make him pop off more
overall, real good though man
Good Character concept but the map needs more detail and contrast and perhaps a tail or an assCrack he looks a bit bare behind there,
Love the sketch too, think I prefer the armbands than those blistery looking things on his arms though.
Other than that, no probs I like it

i love the torso and crotch, looks awesome! I think the enlarged leg joint looks cool. Maybe you could just make it look a little closer to the concept.
and lets see the new textures
cool face too btw

Oh GOD NO!!! The Imps have evoled even more!!!! Ahhhh! lol j/k man. Awesome model. What game engine are you using? THe Engine shot looks nice. I think it looks great. COuld maybe use a good bump map or something though.
SOrry after seeing the bump maps from DOOM III I am addicted to Bump Maps for geometry altering lol.

Looks great!
Crits:
The bow looks a little weird, not as sleek as the concept
He doesn't seem like a "Dark Lord" to me - more like the most powerful henchman, or possibly an anti-hero... Just doesn't have Lord quality about him.
Great model, tho. Great texturing for a 512! I thought for sure it must be at least a 1024!!

Nice model, texture and concept but I agree with Dragon.
Thats no Lord to me either. More of an outcast or a pretty fast hunter.
Still cool

Here's the texture flat. You can see that I've rushed it in places to get it finished in time for the comp (this was my second attempt at a darklord and I started it a little late). The skin and the sword blade are where I spent a bit of time (no graphics tablet, just a cramped right hand)... the rest was kinda rushed.
I can see where he doesn't fit the comp title, but after I'd done the initial concept work I thought he looked too evil to pass up the opportunity to model him :)
Thanks for the comments guys, very helpful!

I can't believe you painted that with a mouse!
It's really very good, and all the colour / intensity sort of crits can be easily remedied. The bow is nice and detailed but I can't really tell what sort of material it's made from..... from the concept it looks like metal...?

Yeah, the bow casing was supposed to be metal. Basically I did the pattern for it and then fiddled around with the levels until I got something that stood out. It still looked a little wierd, but thank god for photoshop... everything is easy to change, it just takes time.

Maybe put some overall highlights on it then... kinda like what you've done with the legs... maybe some motion blurred noise?

Thanks Jacob, I'll have another go at the textures when I get the time.
On another note, I liked your entry for the comp so I had a look at your portfolio and that "interactive park" flash thing kicks arse. Nicely done!

hehe thanks, feels kinda weird leaving all that designy stuff behind a bit.... maybe one day I can be an interface and HUD designer for games :D
Yeah redo the texture in a bit, it's a great model. Don't forget to render out some stuff on a different coloured background.

Neat concept but I agree with the others, your map could use some more "texture" or contrast. Its kind of dull. But the map does look good otherwise!

Yeah, more contrast. I just went through the bombardment of "you need more contrast" replies myself recently. But believe me, it makes a world of difference when you deepen your shadows!
Great concept and model. Definately looks more like a hunter. You gotta animate this guy jumping and pouncing around. With legs like that he should have grasshopper- like agility.

Really sweet man....
My only crit is the neck and head area. The head is not as prominent as that in the concept. It has a more generalised feel where as the concept has more of an edge to it. In the concept the head and neck are almost one (more monster like), where as on the 3d model they seem more a normal person's (if that makes any sense)....
Very nice!
I really like your concept.
I would have to agree with others who say he doesn't look very evil. I thought he was a anti hero when i first saw it. Maybe try some different eye colors and shapes for the mouth to make him a bit more evil looking.
Good job overall
