Twisted-Imperial 05-29-2002, 04:12 AM Hey all!
This is my first challange, looking forward to the critique!
I'll be modelling a griffon for the challange, heres the first wire head, I'm building the model to be smoothed, super hipoly, but for now most of my screen captures will be low poly, as for the neck im not finished with im working out a way to make it apear as if theres feathers laying on top of eachother. Tell me what you think!

I saw a really neat techinque for doing feathers where you extrude the edges of your quads on the surface to make a bunch of "scale" looking planes coming off the skin. Then you just map a feather texture to them that has clipping in it. It looks relly good when done right. It will also allow you to have a nice transition from feathers to fur, as well as start them from behind the head without it looking funky.
The model looks pretty good right now. If you do decide to use the extruded edges techinque for the feathers, you'll need to make the neck higher poly (though that's pretty obvious :p ) As far as the face I'd pro'lly just use a flat texture for the feathers there with maybe a displacement or bump map to add a little definition.
It's looking good so far! I love griffons, I'll have to keep an eye on this thread.

I think that technique would work, although probably only in Maya. Maybe Max but it has been too long. I know specifically my friend at school tried to do leaves and wished he could extrude a plane from a 3d mesh and he couldn't get it to work in Softimage XSI. Our teacher, however, said you could do it in Maya. *sigh* go figure huh.

ooooh! A griffon! Cool
Are you going to make his nest as well?? What's your plan for the environment?
Don't griffons usually live on the sides of cliffs?? It would be cool to model a nice cliff face...

Thx guys! the help is apreciated!
Ive been loosing sleep over this feathered neck thing! heh not really but eh!
I'm 90 per cent sure i understand what u mean by extruding the edges and i guess just laying them down on top of each other, so ill have a post tommarow (thrusday) with the edges extruded, i may do a quick smooth too to show it off.
Oh yea Leigh, if i do an enviorment witch i eventually planned on, (but after the rig and texutres) i was planning on making a nice big valley with steep cliffs to both sides, umm if you've ever seen rescuer's down under, when the boy goes up to free the giant egal, something like that.
Something on the side to keep this thread interesting, your opinion on weather the griffen's forearms should be lion paws or egal talons, just so you know ive decided on talons but when i was doing my research i found alot of images with talons and alot with paws, whats everyones presonal preferances!
oh and for the record i love griffons too and i thought dragons are a bit over done! :)
Thx again for the support!

Well I did up a quick test, and i can see it could work but im not satisfied with how it works. While i was doing it though i came across an idea so the feathers would lay properly ontop of eachother by offsetting each row of edges. also I'm going to try to use wider bases and angle them down towards the end, more feather like. Tell me what you think, thx.

This one im more pleased with! I offset each row of feathers they lay better too, i think i either need more feather strips or make them longer, they smooth decently but i get some wierd black areas above them because there just extruded right off the mesh.
The only way i can think of fixing it is detatching the feather clumps but i dont really wanna do that
Any suggestions?
Thx

It's a great looking model, but you sure do use a lot of tris for what's going to be a hi-poly model. Does it smooth properly?

Well it doesnt smooth properly because of extruded edges, but all i did to offset the feather rows i roated the edges a bit and spliced the polygons into triangles
Im not sure what i ll do about that

Yeah the feathers came out well. You got exactly what I was talking about. As far as the black thing, I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Maybe you could post a closeup of one of these black things? Also as far as smoothing: One thing you could do is detach the mesh that has the extruded edges. That way you can smooth the rest of the mesh and the part with the feathers shouldn't have to be smoothed since it's covered. As far as texturing the feather planes you could paint a 2D feather texture and give it either an alpha channel or make a seperate greyscale pic for the transparency. That way you can have a nice organic looking feather texture that has soft fading edges.
Great stuff so far! Keep it up

Well it it were an eagle's leg I'd say it's too meaty, but since it the front leg of a griffon I'd say it pretty dam nice. One thing though, try either shortining or removing a joint from the "thumb" claw...it looks too long. It makes the foot look kind of like a generic monster claw.

Thx for the input zero1 heres an update with a joint missing from the thumb, it looks more like a hand with a thumb, im not sure witch i prefer but this one seems good too tell me what you guys think

Well im not tottaly satisfied with how the paws look, so rip em apart! anyways im cruisin along with this model and im working on the body right now, im dreading the wings stage, so some insite would be nice too :D
oh and i decided to start uploading my images just because im really getting sick of this under 50k crap and the images look pretty crappy that way :) anways here yea are:

I agree with you about it still looking like a hand. I'd say try moving the "thumb" claw further back on the "heel" so that it's directly opposite the middle claw, and maybe up the leg a little bit as well. I like the shorter version with out the 3rd joint though. And let me be the first to say that that lion's leg ROCKS! It looks really awesome. I can't wait to see it with some claws on the toes. Really great stuff! I think this one is going to be an amazing model.

thx zero1 im really pushing to finish this ill have some screen shots of the body soon, the polys are getting big and even with these boxx machines at the school its chuggin ah well. heres a foot correction, i m not gonna move the back toe directly in the center of the heel but i pushed it over a bunch rotated ect ect and ur right it does look better with only 2 joints in it

I think he looks really good so far, but the back of the foot looks a bit odd. To rounded and a bit droopy. Nice work though. :)
He'll be very cool when its finished.

The part that really sticks out to me right now is it's tail. I like the thickness right where it attaches to the butt, however I think it should taper thinner sooner. Maybe about half as thick as it is at about 2/3 of the way to the tip.
