Hi,

I've been frequenting this forum for a while now and I've finally decided to enter something for this challenge... <gulp>

Everything here is of a really high standard and i'm really impressed. So this 3D artist all the way from New Zealand is gonna have a go.

Attached is a rough sketch of what I've got in mind...

ps: I'm a bit nervous about this.

Oh, and here's a rough sketch of the two characters I've got in mind.

The second may look a little to human so I'll need to add something.

It's kinda daunting seeing how much progress everyone has made so far... gotta get mah ass movin.

Looking good.

I'll follow the updates with a keen eye.

I like the gnomes...err I'm assuming they are gnomes. At any rate I like the 2d so far and the feeling of the guy with the spear/javelin. The space gnome I don't like as much and wonder how your going to have both in the scene. Then again maybe your still deciding so that might not be an issue.

On a different note, do you go and hang out on Weta's doorstep with puppy dog eyes to try and get hired? I know I would if I lived in New Zealand  Go blacks! (i'm actually not a big fan, just had a friend from new zealand)

Tellerve

p.s. the blacks are the "all blacks", the new zealand rugby team...I'm not making a racial slur really.

hehe, cheers... i think :)

Funny you should mention Weta, I actually worked there for 1 1/2 years from 2000 to 2001 as a Digital Surveyor, creating 3d models of the sets from my 3d survey data. So yeah, It was all good to start with but it really started ****ing towards the end :(

Now I work at Sidhe Interactive (nz's biggest game developer) and I'm having so much more fun.

I'll hopefully get some 3D stuff up pretty soon.

ps: I play American Football and I don't support the All Blacks :)

I really like your drawings (they're too nice to call sketches). I'd love to hear about your concept behind the piece. I also don't understand the futureistic and historic differences in the two dude's looks. I like the compsition of your piece so far. It seems to have good balance and lighting suggestions. I look forward to seeing your updates.

great start so far, i dig those characters - except the right guy on the second pic might look a bit too technical for an enchanted forest, but i guess you'll be able to fit him into your idea for the scene

looking forward to seeing another fine piece in this challenge finished :bounce:

Thanks,

Yeah I'm not so sure about the futuristic guy yet but the idea behind the piece is that the environment is split into two indentical halves one being completely organic and really lush and the other being heavily mechanic and industrial. The two characters are actually identical but from different era's or dimensions. Sounds a bit cheesy but I think with a bit of hard work I should be able to pull it off... I hope :)

I'll be working on another sketch tonight (i'm at work at the moment) and that should make it a little clearer.

Ooohhh yeah yeah yeah. I see it now I had missed the metal planks in the corner of your 1st drawing before. I like the idea of organic/industrial contrast.

Alright,

here's another image that should help explain what I was going on about.

The arrow indicates the fact that the set/scene will be extended further than what is actually shown.

Time to start modelling :)

wow, great idea

i really like it, what i don't like about the second pic is the way you try to convey the futuristic feel, i think the metal plates don't really look that futuristic, more like some solid smith-work..

maybe you like this:
how about a bridge at the line where you split the two halfs, one side of the bride(the right) is made of wood and simple, unrefined stones and the other half is made out of shining metal pieces with loads of technical nonsense and details, and then you let the too guys fish on either side, or maybe let the future guy kill fishes with his friggin laser beams =))) (the laser gun should like like the antennas on his helmet) :buttrock:

i'd LOVE to see you do this ! :bounce:

Wow those are great drawings! :applause: Those characters are extremely cool :)
It's funny though, when I first looked at the top drawing, I assumed that the futuristic guy had landed in a spaceship in the forest and the other little guy was a native wondering who the hell he was...
But your actual concept is cool too
These guys are going to look awesome in 3D!

My, My. This looks familiar. :D Anyhow - excellent idea. I just got a flashback to Lemmings. Don't ask me why. :D

Like your sketches, they have a real "kids book" style to them.

dalepugh-

Cheers totally man! Sheesh :p

I don't want to hijack your thread but I'd love to hear about Weta, the good and the bad and why you like the new place better, etc. etc. I'm graduating in a week and the job search will be on and I'd love some insight.

Anyways, back to your stuff... Ok, I get now the techno gnome and see where your going. Although I have to agree I like Fist's idea of a bridge that changes technologies in mid span. I think the ground just changing is just not dynamic enough. I also saw images of a sorta barbaric tribal area with some oddly futuristic buildings in it. Maybe a central techno area with the warrens/poverty area being barbaric-like? Ehh, I'm rambling...back to my own work

Well I've got the model sheet done for the Gnome now and I started modelling the major parts of the environment last night.

I'm starting to think that my original concept may be a little
ambitious (no surprise there) so I may end up cutting it down slightly in order to make the deadline.

What I wouldn't give for a paid holiday right now....Mmmmm :)

Back to work!

model sheet!! Hmm, so are we going to see any of that model tonight or have you really just started and we'll have to wait until a bit later?

Um, well I'm gonna get the bulk of the environment done before I even approach the character, but keep and eye out :)

Should be able to get a couple of WIP's up shortly... I hope.

Coming along nicely, that little guy should look great modelled. Might have to work on an entry myself. I'm thinking "mushrooms", "fairy circles" !! :)

Here's an early wip of the basic scene layout, it's not much at the moment but it's helping to give me an idea of what kind of space
have to play with.

Aearon
05-30-2002, 07:44 AM
yeah that's basically the same method i go about with stuff

general -> detail, can't wait to see this done

Here is the latest state of the bg scene, just starting to get some more geometry in, getting there :)

Alrighty,

well, although I haven't posted any WIP's lately, I have been working on this (when I had the time) but here is a "nearly"
complete image.

Click here for my image (http://nahaz.150m.com/ninety_nine_percent_dp2002.jpg)

I haven't had time to create the character that I sketched but the environment is there :)

Lemme know what you think....

Excelent piece! Nice compasition, good lighting, great textures, solid modeling. I think the only thing that is missing is the "center piece". It needs some sort of focal point; an attention grabber if you will. If you can get your character into the scene that would do the trick.

So it's now 7.09am here in Wellington New Zealand and I'm still plugging away. I started the character for the scene at about 1am this morning (6hrs ago) but here is a few images to let you know where I'm at and if I'm gonna make it... :)

Lemme know what yall think of the design...

Cheers,

the hands are a bit wack though, but when you're under pressure...

So the challenge offically closes in 3 or so hours, is that right?:D

ZrO-1
06-29-2002, 10:11 PM
Well, if it's by eastern standard time you have about 7 hours left.

dalepugh
06-30-2002, 12:19 AM
Oh man, I've run out of time :(

I thought I could've pulled off a character in one night but I didn't.
Oh well here is the latest state of the Gnome character. He's not in the scene but it still looks ok.

Plus, my final environment entry is here:

http://nahaz.150m.com/ninety_nine_percent_dp2002.jpg

Check it out :)

Eagerly awaiting next challenge.

What if you stuck your character in the trench, with his hands on the front edge. Kind of like he was about to climb out? THat way you wouldn't even see his legs.

The textures look cool, and I think he would look good in the scene. You still have 4.5 hours left by my clock.

dalepugh
06-30-2002, 12:29 AM
He he, the thought did cross my mind, but to be honest, I really need some sleep.

Thanks for the input man, it's good to know someone's looking.

I have to re-submit my environment image because the ****in server that I had some space on just told me I had exceeded my limit.

Here is the final environment render.
