View Full Version : character: girl
kotter 09-30-2003, 07:04 PM Hi guys!
Thought I'd start a new thread (first in 2d section:) with a drawing that I started working on yesterday.
Its just a random girl I found a pic of and started drawing (in ps 7 btw).
I know its not much yet, but I think the eyes are pretty much finished. Haven't worked much on the nose yet (trying to get the basic shape), that goes for the mouth aswell.
Let me know if theres something obviously wrong with the proportions.
Thanks.

hey dude! um..i don't wanna be a meany or anything but you ain't got much there to critique. but fear not! here's a really good link that has sweet tutorials on photoshop you'll find interesting.
http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/index.htm
small tip, its way easier to draw something, ink it, than scan and color in photoshop, but if you want the bragging rights of photoshop only than be my guest!

thanks for the reply mirainokirby, and thanks for the link (been looking for something like that).
I've never been able to draw something with a pen, and I get faster and better results in ps.
Is it common to first draw on paper, then scan and colorize?
I've seen many great drawings out here and I just thought I'd give it a try. Bare with me and I'll hopfully have a complete head in a week or so...

don't worry dude, gotta start somewhere right? anyway, since you are familiar with photoshop already it will make planning out how to draw that much easier. already looking at your mini-pic i can see you got an artistic eye, if you just dedicate an hour a night to basic drawing i think you would see immediate results within a week or two. here's a couple more helpful links:
heres a fun effects site: http://www.bluesfear.com/
another basics to advanced tut. site: http://neondragonart.com/dp/
and heres another sorta tip: draw any image of something (just so you can see how this works), now using a nice pen, doesn't have to be amazing as this is just an example, ink the outline. also try and keep the image as clean as possible and all erasers to a minimum. scan that bad boy in...no greater than 300dpi. now go to image-adjustments-auto levels, instantly you should notice that the image is much crisper and "inked". using the eyedrop tool sample your backround (or paper) as it is not perfectly white, and use that color to erase out any unwanted lines, smudges, hairs, etc.
last for coloring, make another layer on top of your original and set its mode to darken. using you awesome pre-school coloring skills set down a basic color and stay inside the lines. (i use the airbrush and i suggest you do too). after you got you "base coat" on the airbrush opacity control turn it down to about 30% and make a quick line over you coat, made a neat overtone? hopefully it did! now you can make shadows and play around all kinds. and if you wanna be safe you make each coat on a seperate layer just in case you think you'll mess up. well i got to sleep but any questions go for it! and im also mirainokirby on aol instant mess.
good luck!

ok... thought I'd post an update before school :)
I still haven't gotten the mouth right yet, but it's better then before, so I moved on with the head, and sketched out the hair.
Having some trouble placing the jawline :(

coming along nicely, as you said jaw-line tweaking, and also i think you should fuzzy her eybrows and make then more hair like, they look too perfect and solid like someone permanent markered them on. can't wait to see the next step, she already is looking like a hottie!

yeah that right side is a bit mischievious, two things you could do, either bring the jaw line down a bit, or bring her hair to cover it up (kinda cheating but hey) well there ya go!
Please edit your first post with the latest updates rather than attaching a new image for each minor update. Thank you.
