Title: Ooh la la!
Name: Andrew Hickinbottom
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

A super-cliched tribute to my super-talented French chum, Serge Birault.
I learned a lot about Vray whilst making this.

Is this the one you've been working around the clock on? It's fabulous! I love the look on her face, a perfect mix of pondering and bitchy aloofness. I really like the apparent simplicity of the shading and lighting too.

Really nice light. Love how you mix your light with the volumes of the forms of your characters. And also the look is great, is not pure 2D look, but is not pure 3D look also, looks like a middle point... I like that (don't know if you did some compositing work by passes or if is just a straight 3D render and some adjustments in the end ?). Also the character is pretty sexy indeed.

One of the best digital illustrations of the year for sure!

You've outdone yourself this time :D Massive awesomeness. Congrats!!1

My only crit is you prolly went a bit glow-happy around the escapist snail, which is quite an important element of the frame imo :D

I really really like this. Everything fits together so nicely. A sexy girl without overdoing it. The heel of her shoe leaves just enough space to give you the idea she walks on these high heels all the time (which by the look of her I'm sure she does), the scarf accents the clavicle which accents her female curves. The face is beautifully lit. The light in her eyes and on her lips gives her even more personality. I wonder if that was done in post? The little escargot getting away isn't necessary, but the bottle is brilliant. I only miss an ashtray?

This is my fave ever. I love how simple everything feels (but I know inside it is not :). I'm very surprised one of the stylistic American film companies haven't nabbed you as of yet....but maybe that's not what you want. Nevertheless, awesome work.

09-03-2010, 07:03 PM
Whoa! Thanks a bunch for all your comments, and especially for the front page!

Leigh - glad you used those terms to describe her expression - that is what i was aiming for. A chic, snooty French madame!

Serge - Desperados' all round! Cheers for inspiring me with your lovely pinups and incessant productivity!

Per Anders - Glad you like the bottle. I didnt want to show the full logo, as i wanted to imply the name, rather than give it away! Hope it wont be a copyright issue though.

Pussycat - i was going to add a shopping bag with the tricolour on and add a baguette, a model of the eiffel tower and some onions inside to balance out the bottom right side of the composition. I added that foreground table instead though as it is much simpler and easier to read. The round shape of the FG table echoes the one she is sitting at too.

PrayingMantis - Hahaha - glad you like it. I was kind of worried about French folks taking offence to its rampant cliches! I would find it quite funny if someone did a british one of a man in a suit and bowler hat, drinking tea by big ben etc....

Malanjo - The vast majority of it was 3d. The only things i did in photoshop were adding the faint scuffs on the bistrot, her lip specular and some bloom/ colour correction. I was going to make the background and foreground out of focus and add some vignetting, but it looked wierd. I prefered it nice, sharp and clear.

Popol - Hahaha - i guess i should have made the cheese really moldy and smelly :-D

Dennis - There probably is a wee bit too much bloom on the table. I did a photoshop layer where the image was made greyscale, then made super contrasty and blurry. The end result was screened on to the comp slightly to make the largest, whitest areas bloom a bit. I wanted to make it look super sunny.

Nemo 1975 - glad you like those aspects of it. The only altered thing on the face was the lip specular hilight. My Vray knowledge wasnt advanced enough to get point specular hilights like that, so i photoshopped it on. I was going to add an ashtray, but i felt that there were already too many elements on the table to take in.

Fudge packer - glad you like the composition. I tried to make it work, but i feel that it could still be improved and simplified - especially around the feet. Guess ive been looking at it for too long!

Evolucian - swiss cheese takes longer to model! I was very lazy with the non-character stuff on this pic...

FabioMsilva - thanks, that means a lot to me, as the lighting was one of the trickier things to get right. Rather than my usual multi-light scanline fakery, i just used ONE light for everything! It was the Vray sky light, so i guess it just behaves like real outdoor lighting.

Xtrm3d - Cheers. I actually prefer Debbie (my previous pic - check it out) and trixie, myself!

Mr Positive - Aw, thanks! I would certainly like to do some higher profile work, but with great responsibility, comes great problems and stress (as spiderman sort of said!). Ill gradually work my way towards my goal (whatever it is!)

Thanks again for all the comments. If im to submit this for the new Exotique book (as well as other potential print oppurtunities), do you folks think that the distinctive bottle shape, label shape and font of the 'derriere' bottle are too similar to Perrier? Would this cause copyright issues?

zokana

Really nice piece Andy, this is the first I've seen of your work but it's fantastic. I really like the style, it's a nice blend of realism with a some slightly cartoony stylization to it.

I'm curious if you have any sketches of the character or scene you did beforehand? I'd love to see the translation of this from 2d to 3d. Great work!

EDIT: I take that back, I have seen your work before. Loved the Olympic characters :)

Congrats for the nice work. There is no question about its quality. This award was really deserved. :)

IMHO VRay is a nice way of not learning how to work with light composition. You click and then you have what you want. Spectral radiance, radiosity, radiant exitance and emittance are concepts that could be used not only for physicists but also for 3D artists and photographers.

I might be crazy but I didnīt like this piece so much (given that it comes from you whose work Iīve seen before and itīs usually great). I find her eyes are looking a bit doll like and some shaders look a bit "unfinished", like the stones from the street or even the skin. I like how feminine and delicate are the shapes of her arm, even though her right hand seems to be kinda flat. The lighting I gotta say looks very good and the mood is there for sure.

(Maybe some of the things I didnīt like are intended and itīs a style thing, the subjective part I mean, hopefully I didnīt offensive or anything close to that).

Wooohoo, that's a beautiful Parisian girl , now for a real tribute to Serge you have to meet the girl from the south of France.

Without having read the legend of the picture , I thought : "oh, this one is perfectly the kind of 3D Papaninja likes :)" . So I guess it 's a good sign to say this tribute is successful !

Congrats for the front-page & award ;)

hey andy, great figure with lot of character. very simpel but efficient. i love the play between 3d forms and graphical shapes. and those gorgeous curves on her body - miam!
just the green bottle is a bit too prominent for my taste - makes the picture tilt to right bottom. less contrast and saturation would help.

like your development - your characters get better and better and you grow with them....

Very good one! Great character, nice lighting, good style. I usually don't comment on cartoony images but here's where I make an exception.

I have a few critics though, I ain't so fond of the floor since I don't believe it should be that undetailed and the Perrier bottle looks more realistic than the rest (inconsistency of style).

Splendid work man, I just love everything about it except for the shading of the cobble stones on the ground. There's something off, probably due to the fact that they're over reflective and don't really look like worn out stones, but rather iridescent shells. My suggestion would be to dramatically reduce their reflectivity and accentuate the stone texture and make the way they look a tad less dominant. That way, you would also be able to divert more attention to the subject, which is the girl.

Absolutely fabulous modeling and composition and mood.

Kudos

Btw. Been away from "cgtalk" for years but came back because I need to model something for my personal website and I want a very smooth GI VRAY effect and you nailed the subtle and smooth lighting I was hoping to archieve. If nothing else, do anyone know a very solid tutorial for VRAY. Premium quality.

Hello,

this is a very nice model and I really like the model but I have to ask why this image has deserved an award? There is basically nothing special here. The materials look plane, there is no sctructure and basically, whats more importand to me, there is no story.
You have mentioned the cliché, but what about it? French always sit in front of a café and drink wine and smoke cigarettes?
Dont get me wrong, its for sure a lovely piece and the modeling of the character is really good plus her pose also fits to her but I donīt think this has deserved an award.

But hey, Im not a judge and I surely grant you the award. It was just my opinion. So dont take it too serious! ;)

That is all that came to my mind... although you have found your way through such simplicity in style... there is true liveliness in this image due to the lighting you have done. Superb job Andrew! Keep it up... and yes this is Ooh La La!

The image made me smile with the escaping snail and her aloofness. Very enjoyable image.

ooh, clever job with the rigging! The facial expression is such an homage to the typical french woman and yet you didnt have to rig it.
