View Full Version : Realtime playback of mocap with shading
theboykidney 09-02-2010, 10:39 AM HI,
We've had someone come to us with a character that will be displayed in realtime using mocap. I think its an interactive scenario, so the character is been driven by an actor who is reacting live to the public.
The problem they have is they can't get the look right, and so they've come to us for 'look' tweaks. Essentially they want a toon character with non-uniform black outline, which is easily achievable in XSI [our native 3D app] but I don't think they realise it wont translate into motion builder. Is this something motion builder can do on the fly? good toon shaders?
Cheers,
TBK

That's what I got in MoBu in 10 minutes. There are some toon shaders. But they are not so flexible like for example 3dsMax basic Toon material.
Whats more in MoBu you can use Cgfx shaders.

I would love to hear about it too!
Is it easy to create custom cgfx shaders?
is there a software for it or is it all coding?

Oh, old thread :)
I've never used CGFX shader in MotionBuilder. All I know that there is some nVidia's software:
FX Composer, CgFxViewe, etc. from nVidia website. Also there are library of shaders http://developer.download.nvidia.com/shaderlibrary/webpages/cgfx_shaders.html
But some people said that only few shaders from this library works in MotionBuilder. My builder crashes when I try to use vbomb or plastic shader from this library.

hmmm
thanks for the info Greenman :)
I am basically looking for some shaders that I can use for a real time project, some shader that wouldnt be heavy to calculate in realtime but would still look good on a toon character, i'll probably will go with the defaults for now but just trying to see what else is out there...
Any tricks for having nice shadows in MB? I've been playing around with the antialiasing in camera settings , but still getting quiet a lot of pixelation, i am using a quadrofx4600 on my machine.
Thanks in advance :)

Personally I don't know any interesting tricks for setting up a antialiasing. Just tweaking parameters for realtime playback.

I've never had to do any sort of shading in MoBu as its really an in-between program, but if CgFx shaders can be implemented I believe mental mill does a really nice job is authoring cgfx shaders. It displays in real time and I believe its now available for free if you have a maya or max license (not sure about softimage)
