View Full Version : Low Poly Body: Im a beginner.
aesir 09-30-2003, 07:18 AM Im fairly new to 3dsmax but Im trying to get the hang of making low poly bodys. The heads are still giving me a crap load of trouble. At least to make them look unique.
Its got about 1500 faces. Any crits would be welcome

Hmm in the renderd version the thum looks to skinny and out of place. hard to tell with the angle. Could you make a render the same as the wire?

The overall body is nice but i think maybe the legs are a little short and stumpy if you could stretch them a little longer i think that it will give the character some more "character". If you do that you will also need to make the feet a little bigger also...but overall great first model....

Ya for a first model it is really nice :) good work man. Now all you need is the head
personally i think your better starting with high-poly models, that way you can "smooth out" your flaws, really helps you learn quicker about the shape of characters and the such, also there is a modifier called optimize that helps reduce poly numbers though i dont know if many people use it, not sure about it really.

yeah optimize works pretty well for lowering the poly count, however it tends to take polygons out where they are needed like in joints of knees and such.
I think the body looks great for a beginner.

LOL. I read that I should start with low poly models before I do high poly things. Oh well. It seems I made this fairly well. Ive gotten pretty much 0 crits. :)

aesir, it's a good model, and a good begining.
Your right, low poly is the way to learn. When working in low poly you learn to build your mesh to the subject. Higher poly counts should be adding detail, not smoothing out mistakes.
Keep it up!
EDIT:
Daz, looking at your current wip (http://www.deviantart.com/view/3274275/) on your website (http://daz-01.deviantart.com/) I personally think you need to go back to low poly school. You need to learn to capture the shape of your subject with your base wires. In the wip, you state your objective to be a fairly standard human head, and your base mesh doesn't even appear to be fairly human, let alone standard.
I'm just a beginner Electrofirma i only just started modelling like a couple weeks ago.
You should know that, that is the first head i've ever had a good shot a modeling, i'm trying to spend time on it and as you know its not exactly acurate, so i'm continueing to work on it and watch other peoples modeling, all the tutorials i've seen tell me to model things in low poly and then use nurms subdivision smoothing thing, I know it'll probably never be an ultra realistic male head, but at least if i keep working on it i can learn basic things about the human head and its shape. Its starting to take a bit more shape and yes i may have been better scrapping that odd thing at deviantart, but every one has they're own mental perception of how something looks which often needs to be corrected to look realistic

Daz, to keep from cluttering aesir's thread, I'll respond in your thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=92433).

haha its ok. I just wanted to post here and see if I was breaking any big modeling rules :)
well i think it was important for aesir to understand i'm no expert either, and that i have trouble with heads aswell. aesir I dont know what your model is for but, if your using it for a personal animation or the such, i noticed he has a fairly baggy shirt maybe you could attach that to him using the sim cloth.. hmm attach is a badly chosen word there, something i feel must be done about the bottom of the pants, thats what i was trying to talk about earlier by saying smoothing, they look real jaggered

The only thing I see that might be wrong is the hands look too small.
What do you plan on doing with this model, or is it simply an exercise.
EDIT: since we seem to be in that mode... Yeah, I'm no expert either!
