Salutations,

and welcome to the Concept SMCs. This is our first time, so please be gentle. Every few weeks you'll be presented with a concept image. You will need to model it within a certain time limit and have fun doing it :)

For our first time we're going to model a space ship. The concept was made by Mike Doscher (http://mikedoscher.blogspot.com/)

Time limit is 5 hours. Shading, texturing and lightning are not included in the time limit and are optional. So you can spend as much as time on them as you want. They are not required but encourged.

Please post your WIPs, problems, comments about your or others workflow in this thread.

Have fun modelling!

Awesome concept. I definitely want to try this out when I have a day to spare. Good luck to everyone else. Can't wait to see the results.

This is a great idea! Looking forward to it.

I am starting out by making colored notes on the drawings to see where everything matches up from top view to side view. Not sure this will end up being "done" within the 5 hours, but it is a good way to get a perspective from the concept and 3D sides of the process.

WIP

1:30 so far.

Mostly, I have worked on the front end and the mass of the back section. Next will be the bridge and then the engines and then details as I have time for.

Well, just started doing it. I realised that not having a "front" reference could prove difficult, as you have to make up the shape of the hull by yourself. I like stipple3Ds shape, so I'll probably do the same.

I'm not far along, so I won't be posting my WIP just yet.

Only 45 minutes to go!??

So much left to do. This has been a great challenge. Hope to finish turrets, engines/pipes and the rest of the radar rig on the bridge. Oh, and the hatches on the side too....

FINAL WIREFRAMES
5 HOURS, 30 MINS (lost all track of time at the end, need to get a timer for these)

http://www.stipple3d.com/images/speedmodeling/5-hours-30-mins--wire1-690.jpg

Link to larger version (http://www.stipple3d.com/images/speedmodeling/5-hours-30-mins--wire1.jpg) (I'm not sure if it really makes much of a difference with wireframes, but....)

Ran over a bit while finishing the back and the engines (how they all come together). There is still a TON of other details I would have liked to see on the model, but it would take another 5 hours to really "finish" it.

For me, tightening this up and texturing might be quite a feat, but I will try to find the time to give it a try (even if that isn't right away). I might work out the kinks with some simpler models first and then apply what I learn to this one later.

Comments welcome and good luck to you MSus.

Wow stipple3d, that turned out pretty awesome! I really like how you solved some of the problems with the "lack" of front concept reference. I'm having a bit of a problem figuring what goes where, so your completed image will help me tons (I hope you don't mind :))

This is my WIP so far. Spent an hour and 20 minutes on it thus far. My next goal is probably finishing the "main hull" shape (with all the curves and do-hickeys), and then going straight to details.

Thanks MSus.

No problem, use the images as reference. Basic shaping looks good to me so far.

Ooh, concept art speed modeling? Lemme join. :)

Here's my W.I.P. at 2 hours in. Not that many detail sketches in the concept art, so I'll have to freestyle a few parts...

rustEdge, that's real impressive

Ah maan I really wish to enter, hopefully I will be able to this week... Still getting settled in here, lots of things to do.

Finally got it done. Gone past the limit by ten minutes O_o.
Didn't have enough time to complete the guns and engines, but I hope it's okay for the given time limit.

Oh wow. You're fast, and good. I really like the clean topology!

This sounds like a lot of fun and I may throw my hat in the ring. If we made a curve network to model around would that count towards the 5 hours?

I don't know. The main point is not in the "rules" and the time limit, but the idea that you have to produce the best model in the shortest time possible. You decide if it counts in the time limit or doesnt :)

Took about 5 hours work, bit slow eh?

Good to see some activity on the SMC forums.

MSus, Can we make the concept sessions last one month? Is that too long?
Feels a bit short with a few weeks, I think I would like to try different approaches when it comes to this.
Gonna see if I can do this concept too.

Sure we can extend it to a month. I'm having problems with finding enough free time to finish this, so a bit extra time will help!

I'll be opening a new concept (probably with 2 concept pictures) on the first of October.

Sweet, thanks. :)
Started today with this one, got 30 minutes in but the topology got funky, gonna try to restart tomorrow. Sure is difficult.

Ok I decided to mess around with the one I had at the moment.
Approx 1 hour this far, I should perhaps follow the original design a little bit more.

Ahh maan I wrote a post and then it disappeared, #%&//#&/ baah.

Anyway, I had to start over, was loosing track over things.
This one here is 2 hours into the progress.

Find it difficult to solve the engine part, mostly because it feels like a part of the structure but then again it stands out from the structure.
Ah well, hopefully I will be able to model some more today.

This was real fun and real good practise, I had a blast and couldn't stop today. lol. :)

I still have 20 minutes left but thing is to finish I would need more time, I kept changing my mind with some details. I guess things like that comes with practise, I hope?
Only one wireframe, still haven't found a good way to get a wire with the beta version I am using.

Haha hilarious I went to "Mike Doschers" site and look what I found, haha ah maan could have used that earlier when I modeled:

I just made the weapons generic and the same all over the ship construction.

Thanks to member "comeinandburn" I can finally show decent wireframes, got some help in the Blender section. :)

Here's the wireframes for the same models as above, some problems here and there but practise wise I think it was a success. Sure as hell gonna need to do more concepts, addicting aswell.

I may give it a shot this weekend. If nothing else than to be faster in modeling. Lately I've taken my sweet time on certain things I have done and I'm not proud. :p Need to get faster.
