Im attaching a polygon ear to a polygon head in Maya. It all works out ok (geo is not teh best, about 2 or three tris) until I go back to convert to sub-ds.
THe process for attaching was merging a few vertices and appending with new polys in the remaining void areas. the error i get says (in script editor) that:

"Nonmanifold geometry cannot be converted to a subdivision surface.
// To clean up nonmanifold vertices, use Polygons->Cleanup with the nonmanifold option. //"

I do this step and convert to sub ds and it works, but the ear is messed up like the screen shot below

Here is a link to the screenie:

I don't know how to post pics form geocities yet...always messes up

thanks for any help...i can post the scene file to if anyone is interested

Weird
I guess I get the hand of this someday.

Anyway. Like I said, I've tried merging vertices and that thing the script editor suggested with no avail. But alas! I hadn't tried both! I did the merge last and it worked. Actually, there were a couple points selected after the clean polygons and i merged those. That did it.

Anyway, would still appreciate if anyone could let me know what was wrong with my model in the first place that it wouldn't let me sub d it.

thanks again.

Have you tried converting the ear and head to sub D's seperately and then combining them? If you could do that, you wouldn't have to make triangles in the polygon mesh.

I don't know if that will work, but its just a thought. I can never get the convert to nurbs or subd's function to work properly so I'm always having to do some elaborate work around.

hmm i think that the prob is actually the normal you gotta flip the normals on the ear when attach it, only after flippin you can merge the verteces , that after conversion it wont be messed up
