Here is an image i am working on :

http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/dragonring.jpg

You will notice the jagged edge to the ring ( more so at the top far side) i have aa at best and have even upped the sampling, i have increased the sections of the ring but i cannot get rid of this artifact

basically i used the ring setup from the maxon site caustics tutorial

can any one suggest how to get this smoother, i can find no smothing tag and hypernurbs does not do any good

Actually looking at the uploaded image the problem seems to go away when the image is full size ( you know the cross hairs enlarging thingy that IE puts in the lower right corner of the image)

The original bmp image had the problem and jpg lessens it, but what if i want the better bmp quality ?

the only problems i see are ones to do with the texture and it's mapping, maybe increase the resolution of the texturemap and sort out the edges of the ring (they appear to be faceted).

If something isn't seen at full size, be it in Photoshop or whatever, then the software has to eliminate a number of pixels that won't show up on the monitor, and this makes the quality of viewing less good. Can this help?
