Note from Roberto
Get ready for another paradigm shift

Quote:
"Turning images on your PC into real-life computer chips with your home printer sounds like science fiction, yet the first prototype is already in operation.

Dubbed Santa Claus machines, these three dimensional printers "print" real objects instead of messages -- but never before have electronics been included in a product.

Soon fully assembled electric and electronic gadgets could be constructed in one go without having to add the components at great cost afterwards.

Other uses include custom toys and the construction of artificial human limbs including sensors and moving parts. "It may be possible to build fairly complex movement and shape into devices -- but that's a long way off," Canny told CNN.

I can see it now:
Wife: "honny, I just cut off my leg!"
Husband: "Okay, let me print you a new one and I'll be right there!"

Hmm...so eventually we will be able to print out little BF1942 soldiers with imbedded AI and watch them tear up the living room...Cool!

Scientists and hobbyists of robotics technology already do this and have arenas where robots are fighting to death against each other. I'm sure you have seen this on TV.

Anyway, that thread makes me wonder. What would you guys try to do first if you had such a technology in your hands?

Anyone ever read The Diamond Age? A lot more ultratech but a great extension of these kinds of ideas, with the matter compilers etc.

So when's the object piracy market start? A version of the RIAA for electronics manufacturers? Overriding safety protocol to print out a bomb? :p

Then if they could just enable these machines to recycle garbage and our old computers at the same time we might be getting somewhere.. and just imagine the intellectual property wars that will ensue once these things are on the market..yippee!

BTW you guys that mentioned creating models of girls and gollums.. you can allready do that with current protyping technology. I think they ar a long way from creating living beings with this tech.. we will rue the day if they ever do.

omg, this is funny. So, how long until this type of tech hits the mainstream and people start downloading the newest GeForce video card off of Kazaa???

This is gonna get interesting.

isn't that the premise of the Star Trek "future" they have those replicators that can make anything, thus eliminating materialistic desires because you no longer hade to make an extra buck to get something that no one else had. Therbye freeing mankind to a life of discovery.

Be careful of downloading a recipe for it that might have a virus especially if it's something you eat. I think they explored this several times where the replicators go crazy. Talk about indigestion or food poison.. oops your DNA got scrambled by some bad tofu dogs.
