Hey there guys :)

I'm very excited 'cos I'm modeling my first robot :D

And your help is being essencial for my work, and I'll thank you forever!

I've researched today for a nice way of modeling sci-fi-like-cables, like this:

http://www.*******.com/getgalleryitem.php?cat=sci-fi&id=3850 or this one
http://www.*******.com/getgalleryitem.php?cat=sci-fi&id=3483

Well, I know I can do it with splines and then make a procedural map to create the details. But some cables will be animated for a walk cicle/attack move. As I really want to do a "custom" cable, do I have to use the spline method or model it from a cylinder, make the details and only then use some method for animation?

Thanks again and be well!

Hi,

The best way to model cables, ropes etc is to use splines or the loft modeling in max.
Lofting is a bit more complex, but it allows you ta make more complex cross-sections than circular splines. Also it has a better uv mapping method.
You can allways start the cables with splines, then apply an edit poly modifier and work on the polymesh whatever details you want, and if you are not satisfied with the result you can allways remove the edit poly modifier from the stack.

Thank you so much Giziz!

I used spline to make the first ones but, as long as they would remain a bit hidden, I chose not to make too much effort for them.

Here is a test render for what I've done: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30642827@N03/4938198030/lightbox/

I'll surelly do the spline + edit poly modifier as you told me :)

Cheers mate. All the best for you!
