Two things i'm looking for in Maya.

Slide Edge...
Is there a way to slide an edge loop along a models surface?

Average/Relax Verts (retain models shape)
Is there a way to "average vertices", smooth or relax them but have them at least "TRY" to retain the shape of the model?

thanks... even if it's a script I need... i'd appreciate it!

Slide Edge is under Edit Mesh>Slide Edge. You select the edges to slide, then MMB drag left or right to slide the edge.

Maya's average verts doesn't hold the original shape very well. One of their engineers made a nice script for this purpose though:

As far as relaxing vertices (while still trying to maintain the shape) goes in Maya, use the sculpt polygon artisan brush set to 'relax' mode - it does a pretty good job of it. You can also select specific vertices and use the 'flood' button to apply it evenly among a selection of vertices.
