View Full Version : Vehicle WIP: 1981 Lotus 88b Formula 1 car
bluestar77 09-29-2003, 03:39 AM Hi, this is my first thread on such hallowed turf. I've been messing around with this whenever I've found the time over the past couple of weeks and am at the stage where I needed it to be ripped to shreds.. :)
It's my first attempt to complete a car (or anything for that matter...). Modelled & rendered in Cinema 4D XL 7.3
The first pic is for reference, 'Our Nige' in the twin-chassis Lotus, the rest are progressions of the model. Comments good and bad are more than welcome...

nice renders!!!
looking mighty fine!

A very good attempt. The only crit I have is the size of the front wheels. On cars of the early 80's the front tyres were very narrow compared to the rear tyres. In your renders they appear to be almost as wide as the rears.

Thanks again, RmachucaA...progress is slow for me though.. :)
Pete - you're right - I noticed that some time after I completed most of the modelling and narrowed the fronts (note the diff. between the first and last render), but I think they might still be a little too wide. It's nice to have another pair of eyes to point it out. Thanks!

They look as if you could probably halve their width to get them to look about right. That will probably screw up your suspension too, as the outside edge of the front tyres is almost as far out as the outside edge of the rears.
You gonna texture Nige's skid lid too?

Cheers, Pete - I'll give that a try. I don't think it'll take too much messing with the suspension. It was getting a little cramped in there anyway. Thanks for the pointer.
Yeah, I'll texture Nige's lid when I get the chance. I'm having a problem with getting a crisp texture edge when I try to map the gold lines around the cockpit & nose...

Wish I could advise you about the texture problem but I don't know much about Cinema 4D. Is there any method as in Max to unwrap the mapping so you can use that as a template for your textures?
Looking forward to see this finished. I'm a big Nige fan. Currently working on and off on the 87 Williams. When I eventually get around to organising webhosting I'll post progress shots.

It's my first time using Bodypaint in Cinema, so I'm learning as I go. I found out how to unwrap, so think I may have cracked the problem. Still getting some wobbly lines in places 'cause of the UVW coords, though. Bodypaint has a strange workflow. I'll post an update soon.
Good to see another nige fan - look forward to seeing the Williams. Another of my favourite designs.

It is definitely a bit tricky to get a nice hi-res line in Cinema and Bodypaint. I tried on my Williams, and even though the map is huge where it goes through the edge of a poly at a shallow angle it is a bitch. I figured I would have to touch it up in photoshop later.
Looks great so far, my only crit is that nose looks too rounded on the sides, it looks like it should be sharper.
Check out my Williams at:

Thanks Conanart. Nice Williams - love that Monaco shot.
I've done what I can about the lines. You're right about the nose, I'll pull it in later - I think the 'a' model I've been looking at in some reference photos I use had a rounder nose than the 'b'. It took 2 days to put together my own blueprints and now I found the real deals on another site. *gnnnnn*
This is the latest update. Still messing with lights, textures and such. Having a few problems getting a nice asphalt render, even with a hooooge color map. Any C4D heroes out there?

That is looking really good. The lines look great. For textures you could tryDeepshade (http://www.maxon-computer.com/deepshade/). They have some pretty cool textures.
Great model.

Wow....that last pic is looking really good. I think your texture and material settings are really nice.
There is one thing I noticed that seems different as far as geometry. This is going to be a little tricky to explain so bare with me or ask questions in a later post.
The area between the tires...to either side of the cockpit.....underneath your COURAGE texture and above the grey stripe/band.....got me?
In the reference pic, the seems to be a slope to that area. Your model seems to have a harder edge (more squared off).
Just a suggestion?

Yes I see what LowJacK means, in the ref it does seem to curve in a bit, but is square in your model. Maybe it is right judging by your other reference though.
It Looks like you also need to subdivide your front wheels a little as they are looking a bit bumpy.
The materials are lovely as are the textures.

Thanks for the feedback.
Hm. LowJack, you might have to explain a little better for me - I'm not entirely sure where you're looking at. Are you talking about the bodywork towards the rear?
Thanks, Conan - I haven't been happy with those wheels since I finished them.

Right by the front wheels literally just inside them, the most forward edge of the side panel.

ahhh. I see what you mean. I think you're looking at the shock cylinder - it's all part of the dual chassis rig. I haven't got around to setting up a lot of the suspension textures, so that cylinder is reflecting the luminous light above the car. It's on the to-do list...lol. If it's not that, here's some reference pics.

Coming along really well now Bluestar. Glad to see you got the problems with the gold lines sorted out. To me it looks like you just have to some final tidying up and sorting out the lighting.
Are you going to put a Nige in it too?:)
