Hello!
I'm new here, so I thought I'd say hi and introduce myself!
I'm really quite a beginner in digital painting (and painting tout court, really), so I'd love to get critiques so that I don't take some bad habits at the start!

Ok so, this first painting I' not sure I can post, since it was done using a photo reference which I found randomly on google. Anyway, it looks nothing like the original, and I did it just for practise.. just to see where I could get. (If it's against the rules just tell me i'll take it down in no time)

Next thing I did, the skull exercise, for I really needed practice..

Thank you for any advice/feedback/critique!

Hey nice start to your thread ! That looks like that vampire from True Blood - you've got a likeness there !

Maybe you could push the tonal values a little further on the skulls but they're looking good and are pretty accurate !

Thank you so much Tonik, actually yes it's that adorable vampire! I'm amazed you recognized her!
:D
Anyway, I'll try to contrast those skulls a bit more, right now I'll try something more "alive", like master studies or animals.. as soon as I figure out where to take references (I know there's a big 3d about these things it's just.. too big!)
Thank you so much for having a look, I appreciate it so much!
M.

i used a nude by hayez for reference, but i'm really unhappy with how this is coming out, something's really off and i really want to figure out what it is before i go on.. so if you got any opinion or critique it's really appreciated, thank you guys

You have some really good work here!
On your last painting, i would say her leg needs more work. Right now it's too straight, there's no definition of the knee. Other than that it's looking good so far, the skintones look very soft.

LaMarg, you have a really excellent start here! You must have some traditional art experience :)

My only critique is a small one:

Something that is working really well on the Hayez painting and could probably be used to help improve the skull study is the technique of flattening/simplifying areas that are not so important in order to bring more focus to a main area of the painting. For instance, on the Hayez painting, you did a nice job of bringing out detail in the face, and managed to leave the rest of the body relatively simple while still being "correct" and nicely rendered. And of course, the background gets even less detail. You can contrast that with the skull studies, in which you have about the same amount of detail (quite a bit) all over the entire piece, which makes it seem a bit static.

Anyway, excellent thread! Can't wait to see more :)

I really like this thread so far. The paintings have a good feeling of care and attention to detail. My only comment is that I wish there was some more solid and crisp lines to focus on in key areas of the painting. Something to show off how confident you are with your model. :D
