Took an old unfinished concept from my friend and colleague Siku, and used it as a loose basis to create this S&M character. It's been a little under a week of work in my spare time. He's about 90% modelled now, and the skinning has been done very quickly for the pose so there's some suspect deformations.

Hope you like it ;)

Some other WIP shots:

http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/freak_wip.jpg

And the quick sketch which I based him on. My guy is supposed to be slimmer than this. I think I'll still use the 'fins' on the arms, and some more straps.

Naughty Naughty Monsieur Clark... perverse and fulla character. Nice one. The "gag" grimace and fur scarf are great.

He won't be able to run very fast in those boots though...I know cos I've tried ; )

another great model !... i was wondering, when you are modeling, do you have a lot of reference images in all your work ? and do you usually model your characters starting with a box ?

Sorry to ask, but it is a HE or a SHE?

The concept looks like a HE, but the ¨gay-disco¨ outfit really confuses me.

(I have nothing again gays, I am myself).

Great character by the way, he/she made it to club of the truly original characters, and it has a very limited membership.

very creepy character you got there matt ;) wouldnt wanna run across him. Excellent modeling, some very nice details. But i dont think a gun suits him, definately needs a whip or something along those lines. The hat reminds me of bison from street fighter.

Anyway, very nice so far.

Matt-Clark
09-29-2003, 02:12 PM
sebek27: For this character I used a basic human torso that I have modelled for a starting point. As for other refs I use Google image search for refs for things like the corset/hat/pistol.

Apollux: He's a he.

AFreeT!bet`: You should post in the focused crits area.. ;o)

Jeffo: I may give him some other accessories, a whip was something I'd considered.

I'm also thinking about pairing him up with another character, perhaps putting him on a leash with a dominatrix female....

oo err

I "love" it!

Don't get me wrong here...hehe!

Really nice model. Looks like a gay Marshall Law, not that there's anything wrong with that. Was it partially based on that old comic book character?
In the side views, the elbow looks a little odd, almost elastic. In the sketch, the bend at the elbow has an "L" shape which looks correct. In the model, the bend sort of curves into a "C" shape which makes it look rubbery. That said , it may just be the angle of the pose.

Jedi_Sav
09-29-2003, 04:41 PM
I think its the Hat that gives the look of Marshall Law. Over all this is brilliant.

The Neck and other S&M Gear is amazing.

I think that the gun fits, it shows that the character is a bit of an eccentric. To have all this modern S&M Clothing but still likes to carry a cap and ball pistol.

Matt-Clark
09-29-2003, 07:41 PM
The Marshall Law thing is interesting. I don't really know the character, but I did a quick search and can certainly see the similarities. Siku, who did the concept is also a successful comic book artist, so perhaps he was inspired by it. I'll let him answer that ;o)

Top notch modeling. The character itself looks a bit gay, but I guess that's in his nature.

Keep it up, great style!

Tiny update:
http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/freak19.jpg

The head was posed wrong the 2nd image, so his chin kind of sinks into his chest a bit. Ah well.

I'm thinking of actually bulking up his arms quite a bit, similar to the concept, giving him a top heavy feel. He intially started like this, but it was too much so I backed it off quite a lot.

Oooh man thats almost scary sick. As always great model. The fur is a cool twist especially in the color. Should you testure this and all. The boa should turn bright ORANGE......Thats would be the clincher IMHO. Along with the female of course...no need to confuse the sex.

Yeah defiantly go with the top-heavy look.

Nothing scarier then a tremendous man in a tight fitting leather/latex outfit.

BTW is it going to be Latex or leather?

Matt-Clark
09-30-2003, 08:46 PM
A quick wire:

http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/freak.gif

And yep, I'm quite looking forward to texturing him....

Matt-Clark
09-30-2003, 10:55 PM
Given him a more 'top heavy' feel by changing the volume of the chest and scaling up the arms and hands. I think I prefer these proportions - they're more of a characature, which suits him more.

Actually, Nothing is scarier than a tremendous man in a tight fitting leather/latex outfit with a FUR BOA !!!!

By the way, how you made the fur on it?

is it going to be Latex or leather?

If it is a gay character IT HAS TO BE leather (insider speaking)

haha. I need me some underwear like that! hehe.
Great update matt. Love the style, the concept, and the execution. He needs some kinda whip imo. Like one of those ones with a whole bunch of lil straps. Or a tickle feather thingy:)

One question tho: Where in the heck did this come from?

Getting better and better.

Only thing would be that the lighthing is producing some weird skin tones on the legs.... maybe that is intentional.

Matt-Clark
10-14-2003, 12:55 PM
I'm gonna do a bit more work on the top of the legs, as they're pretty cylindrical at the mo, and I want to put in some definition. (also on the arms too).
I think the weird tones you're seeing at the edges or the legs are in fact suspender straps... but it's not that clear at the moment so I'll sort that out.

I'm still working on his accessories, he has those classic pistols and a whip still to come.

Oh, I've also started work on his partner in crime... she's his dominatrix master, and keeps him on a tight leesh ;)

one of the most original models i've seen posted in a looooong time...

just excellent ... marilyn manson with muscle tone..

Raymonkey
10-14-2003, 02:07 PM
Bah! Utter rubbish as usual from you Matt. I'm surprised Siku let you butcher his concept like this ;¬)

I really like the beefier version and I think the skin shader and the leather is working really well. Dr. Frank N Furter would be proud.....

But (and there always is one) I feel that the holsters that are suspended off the centre of his corset don't look under tension enough to cause the wrinkling that's occuring there. I want tight, but I'm seeing saggy. Similarly with the suspenders at the top of the boots.

They wouldn't let him into the Electric Ballroom unless he was strapped up tight (ask James).

I hear you monkey man, some of the straps and parts of the corsett lose tension due to the skinning, I'll rectify.

Small update. Horrible skinning prob round the waist, but that'll wait... still working on the shaders.

http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/freak30.jpg

Background is a test at the moment, I quite like the idea of a padded room. If I go for it then I'll obviously put more time into the padding, adding creasing round the 'buttons'. Also have him sink into the floor a little, rather than having his enormous platforms clip with the floor like they are at the mo... :os

Maybe it is already too late for this, but I finally noticed what is "wrong" with the legs.. look at the picture, but cover from the waist down with you hand... you see a relly freaking S&M Male. But now cover from the waist up and look again... you see a FEMALE with a leather fetish.

His legs need some more muscle tone.. compared to the arms it looks like to bodies seamed together..

Another note: NO SELF RESPECTING S&M Male would ever use a pelvis strap like that.. he would use something that draws attention to the croch... something more like a tong.. something that will form more bulk around that "special" area. Right now it looks more like a female panty... you need more manhood in there!!!

Ever seen one of those protective cups that baseball players use under the pants? Something like that embebed on the outfit.... yeap !

Matt-Clark
10-16-2003, 12:06 AM
Hi Apollux. Yep, I know what you mean about the legs, but that's kind of fitting with what I want. Originally he was going to be very skinny (still evidence of that on page 1), but I bulked up the top half with intentions of him being very top heavy, but with feminine legs. However, I know that the thighs are pretty awfull at the moment - they're pretty much pink cylinders, and I'm gonna rework that area, perhaps give the impression he's squeezed his legs into those boots ;) (oh, and I might change the jockstrap/cod piece/call it what you will, but I'm not too sure. It was orginally going to be quite phallic, but I was already wondering what people were gonna think!)

Meantime here's some experiments I was doing with the background.

freak32! freak32! freak32! freak32! freak32! freak32!

The "funel" background is the more interesting.. and the more likely to be inside a discotec.

It was orginally going to be quite phallic, but I was already wondering what people were gonna think!)

You made such a model and are preocupied about what other people may think about ??? I can't believe !!

Make it as outrageous as possible... that' s the point of it, isn't it?

HAHAHAHA!! Great going, and actually, I can dig the half-man/half-woman thing. I love the attention to detail you've put into this and the concept is truly twisted with the quasi-biker/gay/rocky thing going there. Great work!

I like this Matt. Nice seeing something a bit edgier than usual.

Regarding backgrounds, I think the freak32 one looks best. But maybe you should tone it down even more. The red gradient one you had a couple of pages back look almost the best I think.
He is so busy now, so much going on in the actual model. So you probably want a background wich is as clean as possible.

cheers.

Jedi_Sav
10-16-2003, 12:56 PM
Got to go with the Funnel background...

Now he looks like he is in some twisted asylum/nightclub

BTW what happened to the pistol? I thought it was a nice touch, but seeing the environment I guess it no longer fits in.

Raymonkey
10-16-2003, 01:39 PM
freak32 is my favourite of the images.

I think the curves have two main effects, firstly they add a softness which contrasts/corresponds well to both the hard (ball gag, hat and so on) and soft (boa, latex/leather) parts of the character. Secondly they give a nice compositional element that suggests a greater depth to the image which makes it feel like theres more to be seen - always a good thing in my opinion.

If you go for a flatter more 2d background it risks losing some of the character of the environment - this is a problem I have with a lot of brom's work - good characters but they always look like trading cards as there is little depth to the background....err, obviously he has done a lot of trading cards, but I hope you get my meaning.

It also reminds me a little of a camp version of the Piece of Mind album cover:

Piece of Mind (http://cdcovers.iespana.es/cdcovers/CoversI/Iron_Maiden-Piece_Of_Mind-Front.jpg)

I think it could be interesting if he was chained to the wall in a similar way? After looking at the pose you've got a few times I get a disturbing image in my head of the Fonz saying "Ehhhhhhhh!" Dunno why...

Apollux
10-16-2003, 05:37 PM
Actually, I like the chains idea very much... he is chained to the room and his Dominatrix is about to do nasty things on him.

Love that model dude (long time no see btw)

I like the 'cove' background most.
And maybe alter the floor to a saterday-night-fever floor with collored lighting or something :)

I would like to suggest you try something (collor-wise) to seperate your character and the background more..it all kind of lumps together with all the pinks.

Black leather is personal favorite :)

That character is excellent Matt.

I hadn't happened upon this thread until today and just noticed that there hasn't been a post in awhile -- I hope the scene hasn't died on the vine?

The freak32 image is the most interesting background at the moment. Adds a bit more depth, and offers a chance to balance off the character with the darker hues there. It's hard to guess how adding in the dominatrix would change everything up though :)

I've been following your work for a while now and I think that it's been very good. Great in fact. Couldn't help but see a bit of resemblance to "shock-rocker" Marilyn Manson in this image. I've seen him pose that way in many a picture. Maybe just life imitating art huh? Great work.

Whoops, failed to notice this old thread had been revived!

Yes, the GIMP character did indeed make it into 3DWorld - issue 46 featured an article about freelancing, and interviewed a number of artists such as Pascal Blanche, Steven Stahlberg, Brian Taylor and myself. The usual gallery section was then devoted to the artists in this article, and I got the GIMP image on a double spread with Rust Boy, which I was really pleased with.

I don't consider the GIMP finished yet, I don't have much spare time at the moment, but I'll hopefully get him done for Expose 2.

This was the image that went into 3dWorld:
