Hi, this is my first message here, grettings to all the people here,

my english is not very good , so i hope you guys, can understand my words :)

Im a architecture student, all my life i modeled buildings in autocad and after that, exported to 3dmax for apply materials, lights and make the final renders.

Now im requested to make a whole building using 3dmax only, but sincerely i never modeled with precision in 3dmax before,
i used 3dmax mostly for make 3d car models using blueprints as reference but never never work with total precision as a architectural building require.

So im here to ask you guys what's the best method to model architecture with total precision in 3dmax.

I know the boolean operations in 3dmax not work fine, maybe im wrong.
so what are the best methods? or the most used methods?

thanks in advance, have a nice day.

Booleans suck. There is no need to use them.
Yes, you can be percise in 3ds Max. That is an old rumor put out by people that are too lazy to use the program.

Turn on your snaps, right click the transform buttons to open the type in window. Draw lines and extrude away. Easy and fast.

My tip - draw in elevation, not plan.

Look at my webpage - everything there created in Max.

Good luck.

Max is great for modeling achitecture.
I was like you and came from a AutoCAD background and thought I would never be able to model acurate in Max.
Now I can do it in my sleep and will never go back. Modeling about 50 buildings has aslo helped.

Do like meanadam said and create splines and draw in ortho views. (top, left, right, front)

The booleans do suck, but they can be useful, for good booleans try using power booleans (http://www.npowersoftware.com/) they work great.

Snaps,Snaps, and more Snaps for accuracy.

Just keep practicing, it will be much, much easier and cleaner geometry compared to AutoCAD
