OK!

I'm going to live dangerously and go for this challenge...

No ideas yet of the environment, I think i'll have a look through my Escher / Dali art books...

hmmmm....

:lightbulb Heres an idea..

How about a forest where the elves practice their archery? I probably won't model the characters, but I have an idea of having a forest with a clearing where a butt is set up for the elves to shoot at... Being an archer myself I should be able to model an archery target butt easy enough. Just modelling that forest & clearing.....

hmmmmm..... :hmm: Would such an image fit the theme?

Think i might switch off the 'puter, put a cd on the hifi and do some doodling and practice my rather poor drawing skills.... Then scan it in and ink using my new Wacom! At least that would get some ideas down on "paper" and get me started on the modelling...

Anyway, nothing to see here, move along please! ;)

Don't quite know how an Escher forest would look, trees growing from all sides maybe? But a Dali one sounds like an excellent idea.

Actually, scrub that idea, I have a better one! :applause:

I dug a few sheets of treelore given to me by a friend
of a friend... ;)

What particularly interested me was the treelore associated with the Hazel tree.

"In Celtic mythology it (hazel nut) was the nut of wisdom. Legend has it that the River Boyne rises from a spring surrounded by a grove of 9 hazel trees. The salmon in the pool swam around and ate the nuts that fell into the water thereby it possessed all the truth in the world. Any man who ate such a fish would gain the fish's wisdom."

Another internet site quotes: (http://members.tripod.com/ClanOfDanu/hazel.html)

"In Celtic tradition, the Salmon of Knowledge is said to eat the 9 nuts of poetic wisdom dropped into its sacred pool from the hazel tree growing beside it. Each nut eaten by the salmon becomes a spot on its skin." So, if you then ate the Salmon of Knowledge, you became a clever chappie!

Personally, I think the latter myth could give a better image, with a single tree standing next to a small pond in the midsts of the forest in the background.

Does this seem a good idea? It seems to me like it is enchanted enough... I'll try and get a rough sketch done tomorrow! I need sleep :annoyed:

:lightbulb

Hang on one cotton picking minute!

Escher did a lithograph which showed a fish in a pool, which reflected the trees surrounding the pool, with leaves on the surface of the water... I may be able to base my image on this, except the trees which will be reflected will be hazel trees, and the fish a salmon... hmmm, ahh, here is the original:

I hope this wouldn't be considered cheating using such a picture in for inspiration?

I like the Celtic idea, you could model one of those great Celtic crosses, seriously old and moss covered and put it somewhere in the picture.

I know that Escher image, very striking, can't imagine how you get the enchanted bit though.

I hear what you are saying about the Escher image.

However, I have done some more net searching about the Celtic Hazel tree myth, and I have found another spin on it.

Basically nine hazel trees overhang the Well of Knowledge (also known as the Well of Segais), and the nuts from the trees fall into the well.

Salmon eat these nuts, and become the Salmon of Knowledge.

:lightbulb

So my idea is we have a Well of Sagais, decorated with Celtic art, a single large Hazel tree with large nuts ready to fall. All this in the clearing of the Enchanted forest. A single tree would look more less cluttered than having nine hazel trees.

:bounce:

I think i need a breath of fresh air after all this hard thinking! Then crank up the tunes, and get sketching!

I have suprised myself with my drawing skills! :bounce:

I have attached a rough 30 minute sketch, and I am hoping to get some colour in it to use as a modelling referance.

Here is an update!

Scanned the sketch into PSP, and done some inking using my new Wacom Graphire 2! :)

I think that's enough painting, now to start the modelling!

I know the main tree does not look very Hazel tree like at the moment, but i'm searching the net for images of the tree.

cheers

bah, so i'm now at the frustration of annoying software..

Modelling in Amapi, models well, but renders poor. Importing the objects in to blender they are far too huge....

/me tears his hair out and sulks in the corner.

Guess I may end up using Bryce 3D.....

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
It's not the end yet!! You do not need to resort to such drastic measures!!
Do you not have ANY access to any other rendering software???? :surprised

Povray, BMRT, Lightflow....

Wish I had maya or something... :annoyed:

I don't want to get to much of the scene modelled in Amapi only to find out I can't get it to render using another package.....

ho hum.

Hmmm yeah a tricky situation...
Umm what format do you export from Amapi though?? Surely there is a plugin available to export to 3ds. format?? Because 3ds. is recognised by just about every piece of 3D software out there :)

3ds, dxf, povray 3, renderman rib (although it only exports the objects, not the camera information), lightwave, artlantis, and cinema 4d.

BUT, the problem I find with amapi is that it exports objects very large sized, importing them into blender needs them to be shrunk about a zillion times... :thumbsdow

Of course, a 2D entry for the challenge would have none of these problems!
