Because under "Customize User Interface - Keyboard" there isn't a shortcut listed for "Rotate View".
There is a function called "Write Keyboard Chart..." and I searched through that txt file generated with "View" "MMB" "Rotate" "Alt" "Mouse" and any other word only to confirm that max doesn't provide a way to change "Rotate View" shortcut, which right now is "Alt+MMB".
My mouse's middle button is so hard, and I'm a maya user too, that's why I find 'Alt+LMB" would really help me out.
