View Full Version : 3d Model: Cartoon guy...
pOiNtPuShEr 09-26-2003, 07:07 AM Trying to make a new character to rig and animate. Just wanted to create something kind of fun and squash and stretchy. The immediate influences were Aardman's short film "The Deadline" and Loony Toons (mostly the proportions -- kind of bugs or Daffy type).
Any comments or suggestions related to the loops or overall shapes would be most appreciated.
Using Maya 5.0.
Thanks,
-Danny

nice and simple. The mouth seems a little basic, but with some blends may work. Also watcht he ends of the gfingers...kinda flat?
BUT please post your software, it's one of the rules of the forum, but minor enough I won't remove the post, thanks.

I like your model a lot. The only thing that looks odd to me is the relationship between his calf and thighs. I'm not sure if I would make the upper leg larger or the lower leg smaller, but with the large feet, he'll need descent sized legs. Good work.

this reminds me of an animation by a dude who is now working in pixar. I think its called Alien song.
Anyway it looks cartoon to me, so i guess you're on the right track. Well the mesh looks clean from the images posted.
Keep it up.

A couple crits here:
I think you might need a few more loops in the elbow area. It seems like the existing ones are a bit far apart for a good elbow deformation. I would add a couple more right in the elbow area so that it bends nicely.
I like the overall character. I have always liked the large eyes/large hands feel. I think it makes the character somehow more lovable and human feeling. However, the feet feel strange to me, specifically between the tip of the foot and the heel. It seems too flat and slender there for such a large toe area and the heel area seems to lack definition. I would cartoon it out and exaggerate it a bit like the rest of the model.
Looking forward to seeing more!

very nice model, i am suprised as you ask specifically about loops noone has said where to put em?!. when you modeled it it looks like you stitched the arms and legs on so that helps to give natural loops ther right way anyway, but i would have added an extra one in just in case at both the shoulders and hips (and at the elbows when making the arm) and there are already plenty at the neck and waist.
for the shoulders and hips just divide the first line of quads that go round the leg after the body leg split and push their verts on the body leg divide into the body a bit and the new ones out. it looks like they go far enough up the body to allow the thigh to rotate into the body a fair bit, but i cant see on the shoulders.
I can see you have put plenty in round the eye, but perhaps you could put another set in round the mouth too? i find that it usually needes more than the eye if he is going to yell or anything like that.
Should i be worried when i think models like that are cute, oh well keep up the good work?
