View Full Version : Is there other modeling option then polygon modeling?
Jeremy07 08-04-2010, 03:46 AM I am in a bachelors program at ITT Tech. My degree is for game design and we have been using 3ds max to do all of our modeling up to this point. I am having trouble still getting the hang of polygon modeling in Max and it isn't clicking for me. I have always been good at art and I can draw almost anything on paper but modeling is another story.
I was curious if there is any other software out there that incorporates drawing into modeling. If polygon modeling is the only way to succeed as a game designer I am going to have to really consider if this is for me. I want to be a game designer, so I assume you need to be able to model to some degree to get a job. All help is appreciated, thank you for your answers.

Game models are all polygonal modeling, since there are specific requirements of polygon counts. So if you can't do that you're going to have some problems.
Using Zbrush would be more like drawing, but again, in the context of games you would need to know how to create a low-polygon model render the zbrush details to.

There are ways. I prefer the more fluid of sculpting models. You can sculpt using one of the many softwares. Then retopo that model. Theres even a potential auto retopo being developed which may save alot of time(but it will still need to be manipulated but that should be easier than fully modelling something).
I use that method to create low poly models, its more fun, you end up with a less uniform model and its easier to create complex curved surfaces(even if you do lose them on the low poly but they still have a hint of randomness).

Starting out is always going to be a bit rough. I would try sticking with it though, as it can be very rewarding once you get the techniques down. Eventually you will be able to poly model any shape like it were second nature. I am frequently looking at objects now in the real world and visualizing a low res cage around them, and thinking about how I would add the detail.
There are other modeling techniques out there. Most rendering engines only understand triangles though, so eventually your geometry is converted to polygons for rendering, be it NURBS or whatever.
