C'mon Gabe...which is it!?!?!

"Gabe Newell sent us a mail letting us supposedly know that the 'news' posted on Shacknews yesterday (story) is a fake and that Half-Life 2 has gone Gold and in production now. Here's the official word: "The release will still remain on schedule for Sep 30th"

Runs for the hills.........

Sounds like delay has been reconfirmed.

Btw, I don't understand why people are so fixated on HL2. A lot of great games are coming out later this year i.e. Call of Duty, X2: The Threat, Deus Ex 2.

i hate to say it, but i'm truly not excited about halo, i'm more interested in playing HLČ, and then making my own stuff for it. Becuase i love how the HL engine does level design.

I'm just working on killing my hl addiction ;) and I just didn't see halo as being as fun as HL too... it seemed to be out of my gameplay style..

but i mean, I'd more then LOVE to work on it ;) (bent, is the hero of many a canadian, i'm not an exception!)

Halo was a quality game and very well done. BUT it is not on par with HL.
HL2 especially!
Halo's levels were boring and repetitive. HL took you everywhere, and they always looked fresh and amazing. You were encouraged to explore, not just open doors and kill.
The vehicles in Halo were a blast, but now HL2 is integrating them too.
There are probably secrets not yet released about Halo2, but come on... 2 uzis at once... uhh what's the big deal? Even golden eye for n64 did that, it's been done...

HL2's anit-gravity gun, that can drag corpses around and be used to throw at enemies, and rip stuff off of walls... THAT'S AWESOME!!
What other game has done that??

I will most likely buy Halo again, regardless, but look at what other games are out for Xbox during the first year, and you'll see why everyone bought Halo. Now that Xbox got their act together, and got more titles, i don't see it as being as big of a blow out in sales the next time around.

Alot of features in FPS can be likened to gimmicks to sell pizza...

...just another fancy way to get the public interested in the traditional pizza...

which begs the question...if FPS' are like pizzas, what kind of pizzas would they be?

By your premise, fps = pizza. add 2 guns at once = extra cheese. add entirely new gun = calzone.

Well I loved halo, no doubt about that, I'm still playing it. But there is just something about half life that really drew me out of "the game world" and made me feel as if I was really there doing this stuff, where as halo was/is a blast to play, but not really as engaging. I'm really excited about half life 2 and halo 2, but I'm more looking forward to half life 2 for its moddability on top of its excellent story and gameplay, so if I were to liken both games to food, then i would say half life 2 would be the all you can eat buffet were as halo 2 tastes just as good but its only takeout.

See, by the time Halo 2 comes out on a system that I can run it on(not an X-Box), it'll be quite out of date, just like Halo.

Were Halo released on PC when it was intended to, it would have blown people away... releasing it now is almost a joke...

or you could just play halo 2 on the damned hardware it was made for and bite the foolish pride of FPS' needed a keyboard/mouse combo...I am so tired of that argument...

halo was brought to PC because of a promise to our fans...halo 2 on the other hand is xbox exclusive, and I think it will remain that way, only time will tell...

I don't understand how people can already declare HL2 a better game than Halo 2 when neither game has even been released. It is likely that both games will kick ass, as to which one is better, it will probably be a matter of personal preference. HL2 will do things Halo 2 doesn't, and Halo 2 will do stuff that HL2 doesn't.

With that said, Doom 3 will destroy both of them. ;)

the thing is, i can't seem to persuad my self to agree with that last post.

The thing is that HLČ will not only be an fun and intersting (as well as rather new) gameplay experience, but it will be a strongly supported engine platform, where as I've been reading that DOOM won't be moddible, and it is NO WHERE near as versitile ( *cough* multiplayer) as well as the way HLČ's source engine runs materials and lighting will allow alot of diffrence, as apposed to DOOM's harshe overblown lighting (which gets on my nerve's sorry, i do film work, and that type of lighting is horrible!)

but DOOM will probebly have a good playability.

Halo, well it should prolly be a fun playthrough (alot like maxpayne) but i sure wouldn't be playing it again.

hey bentlama did you have to play it in 640x480? I heard somewhere thats how they were showing at quakecon :D
(I'm not dogging the game, actually i'm looking forward to it also) but I was just wondering. That really sucks about D3 multiplayer.
Valve hasn't given much information away as far as multiplayer (anyone care to speculate?) but they have at least said they can support bf42' size maps, and 32 if not 64 players (can't remember exactly right now) and that vehicles will be supported in multiplayer. Also I wonder if we will see CS2, DOD2, NS2 etc etc on the new source engine... (i can't wait for all the great mods) also bentlama just wondering what you thought of the first half life?

BiTMAP Agreed.

HL2 and Doom3 are two completely different titles.

No one has ever accused id of a storyline and multiplayer innovation. They make rock solid game engines that last for years. Witness the amounts of Quake3 engined games still in production today. (Looking forward to Call of Duty myself).

Then Valve showed HL2 just before E3 and jaws dropped. Impressive, innovative, and targeting lower PC architecture requirements to boot. At Quakecon id played Doom3 at 640x480 in 4 player multiplayer. In the meantime Valve have yet to showcase or make concrete statements about multiplayer.

If id sticks to their guns and makes classic Doom with dark atmosphere, with uber hardware demanding graphics, I think they stand a better chance than if they try and outdo HL2. There is a market for both types of games.

Ids success will show in four years if games using the engine are a key part of the market. Since Quake4 is already under development using the engine, it should be interesting how they have handeled the seamingly low multiplayer abilities.

I think ids best years are behind them and there are talented kids in the Baltic states pulling off some pretty impressive stuff.

exactly.... HLČ is targeting more people with its scalar engine allowwing infinite change, they said right now the engine can hold those size maps and 32 players, but the only limit is the computers that will run the gameservers, the game could scale up even bigger, and as some of the old hl mods show, the engine can do anything!

Ah, you mean Macintosh? Oh that's right, Microsoft bought Bungie and made it PC exclusive... so I should play it on PC...

Wait, they pulled that too, and released it on X-Box because they didn't have enough good games...

The fact that it took this long to get it out on PC, since it was nearly finished when they bought it, is quite depressing...

And I'd have bought Halo if it had come out for PC, as it looked fairly neat, but nothing too exciting... I'm definitely not buying a console that only has one game that I'm not even REALLY that interested in just to play a game I'm probably going to just put down in a month or so anyways... With the money I can save not buying an X-Box, I can buy a fairly decent PC...

Oh wait, I DID buy a fairly decent PC for less than I would have spent on an X-Box... go figure...

not sure if you know ( err i think i wrote this place else too ), but a number of companies turned down to work on the Halo PC port.
that definitely slowed it down. so its got nothing to do with bungie failing at doing it..or microsoft.

at one time Digital Extremes was asked to work on it, but they turned it down cuz they were working on UT2003, etc. not sure about the others.

yes, i read in 'the edge' magazine that gearbox were suprised to find how undeveloped the pc version of halo was, apparently bungie stoped development on it to concentrate on the xbox version.

The same way movie critics say whether or not we'll like a movie before they even know me.
And the same way that video game mags give reviews after only playing it for a little bit or a beta version.

We're just going off of the visuals and the trailers. Which is true to the game, expect the gameplay. Yes, opinions might changes once the game is launched, but not substantially. It's not like we're reviewing some LucasArts game here

The more I read about HL2, the more I want to play with it. There's some rilly good *subtle* stuff in that engine that I want to play with.

I still don't buy the silhouettes of D3., tho everything else is goddamn outtasite. Such tasty artists....:)

I think Halo (on Xbox) is a GREAT game. It's the only other console game I've ever come back and played repeatedly after I beat it, besides Goldeneye. I still play it probably 3 times a week at least.

I've been visiting some of the HalfLife2 forums since the game was supposed to ship on 9/30, and I wanted to check out the buzz. Then the delay was announced and I thought people were going to jump off of bridges or something. People were FURIOUS.

I understand being excited about a game or movie that is coming out, but holy mackerel...

I remember how insane people were going just before the release of the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo. OOFAHHH:eek:

The buzz and excitement was astonishing. I jumped on the forums the night of the release, and it was amazing to see how apeshit d00ds were getting over this.

Then the demo came out and a coolective groan was heard worldwide when people realised that they'd have to re-learn how to play UT.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! WHat a bunch of Tools:D

I don't care about playing it (well I do) but I rilly want to see what I can do with the engine. Are they still giving away some xsi mini with the mod package? It's been awhile, but I remember a couple things.

For 2003 it was Maya PLE with a special plugin. They promised a GMAX thingy, but it hasn't and probably won't happen.
