Hey guys. I'm completing the first shots for my first reel. I'm trying to get a job as (Assistant) Modeler & allaround guy, probably for TV. Basically just trying to break into the industry.

this is the first piece (not first on the reel, as it's basically my first ever model, but i might still use it). the model is over a year old, but i gave it some fresh materials, lighting & rendering, and this is what i want the critique to be focused on. feel free to crit anything though, especially timing and anything reel-related.

what i'm trying to do here is the basic turnaround thing, but without boring the viewer with basic turnarounds, if you know what i mean ;)

I'll post more little sequences as i render them out. right now i'm also modeling a character for this flying machine, so there's more stuff coming up.

here's a question too: do you think it's a good idea to use cloth sim on the wings? i'm not too worried about it, i think it subtely helps making the scene a little dynamic. i don't really want static clay models on my reel. however, i heard that the obvious use of plugins is sometimes frowned upon...

(note: the background is broken in this animation, that will be fixed)

lookin sharp so far, tho the background is kinda rough in comparrison, i almsot think it would be stronger on a blackish bg... Maybe just adding mroe detail to texture etc

yeah i like the cloth sim to, it really adds a nice level of subtle detail, so def keep it.

Ill keep an eye on the thread for sure. Good work thus far.

A couple of comments ... if you're not tired of hearing from me yet - hehehehe.

I like the wireframe viewing, but I think the geometry is getting lost in the wireframe of the background. If you could superimpose the wireframe of the flying machine over a normal render of the background at maybe 30%-40% transperancy, I think it'd show off your model much better.

The engine seems to be moving too ... is that on purpose? Looks a little strange, like the wind is somehow affecting it like the wings.

You produce good stuff fist, I'll be keeping an eye on this to see how you progress. Put that spaceship on your demo too ... it just rocks my boxers. :D

Great work so far. The lighting and modelling is real nice, but i think the animation still needs some work. i think the camera passes are a bit fast. I wanted to check out all the small gizmos you put in there and a longer look at the wire frames. And i think a proper cloth sim will improve the look a bit more.

i have a few more suggestion, depending on how much work you want to put into it.
Put a few more moving parts in the engine. like kirt said, it looks a bit strange the way it is now.
Some smoke coming out of the engine.
Some bubbles or some movement of the liquid in the tanks up front.

thanks for your very useful suggestions guys and compliments too (hi kirt :))

KingMob: thanks for opening my eyes :) after staring at it for so long i didn't even notice the environment was a bit off. contrary to your suggestion i remodeled and actually simplified it. i think it catches less attention to itself now. i also added a backlight on those hills in the background. and some 'waves' in the desert sand.

kirt: i guess you're right, a wire of the sand is not needed. i think i'll just turn down it's brightness by 50-75%, that should be less confusing. i don't like the thought of mixed render/wireframe. the geometry won't match exactly, because the render is subdivided. the engine is supposed to be 'working', i guess i'll have to work on the animation, it's too random now.

oh and the ship & trailer will both be on the reel.

pencil_head: thanks for your compliments. on second thought i think i'll make the wireframe a tick longer. keep in mind that the recruiters can always rewind and watch it frame by frame if need be, so i won't much longer. you're also right about the fast cam move, it looks a little weird now.. i'll make that a little slower too. but the final render will be practically 50 frames per second (interlaced) and have a bit of motion blur on it. the smoke idea is very cool, i'll definitely do that!

here's a new still for now, i'll render the new animation in one of the coming nights.

and here's an improved wire as well

I would suggest a slower set of camera moves (as previously mentioned) and also doing a wireframe only of the vehicle.

The environment mesh is not as important, and only helps to obscure the wire of the vehicle.

I really like the billowing wings and material. It adds a very nice touch.

i'd like it if the small little (footstep?) plank of metal type things just infront of the chair was a bit more reflective and a bit darker on the edges, just a tad, it would make the whole thing seem much better, especially when it going past that little piece just in front of the chair

when the camra tilts down and zooms in to the model, the back ground plane image looks wierd. its like your ground plane doesnt go al the way to the horizon. As some one else said, more secondary animation would be nice to. The wing flutter and engine movement is great. More of that.
This is lookn really great. keep it up.
