View Full Version : How do I model guitar strings? (3Ds Max)

Hey. I've recently started to model a guitar - Explorer EX-260.
and since i'm not such a professional in 3D I came to a problem where I don't know how to model the guitar strings..
I think the most easy way to that would be splines.
Here's a picture of what I thought I sould do:
http://up203.siz.co.il/up2/hjmxqzyzzdmn.jpg (http://www.siz.co.il/)

The black line shows what I want it to continue to be..
The circular shape you see in blue is the start of the string, I don't really know much about guitars.
I've made that circular shape with a spline, a circular one, broke up one of the vertecies, and lowered it. so it would give the 'knot' affect, now that went pretty well, but there's a problem :p I don't know how to "extrude" the spline.
If someone could tell me I'd be happy to continue my project.
*By extrude I mean like the black line I've drawn.. See the pic ^^
thanks for the helpers!

You're very close!

Just put the spline all the way you want it to be (with the spline editing tools) then make a cylinder with enough height segments to be detailed enough to cover the whole string, you can adjust this later on btw.
After that, you can simply do a PathDeform modifier and give it the percentage (and stretch) you need it to be..

It might be oriented a little weird, but thats easily fixed with align (alt+a)

Thanks for the comment!
so after this circle, how do I "pull" it to be a line?
as I showed in black, I didn't really find any tool..
and about making it a tube - I can use the sweep modifier, or the "Enable Renderer/in viewport"
wich is easier :-)
Thanks for your comment.
Edit : I think I got it !
I am using the "create line" tool, I'm just drawing another line and fusing them together, i'll comment if I succeeded.

I don't quite get the question, can you be more specific?

Umm, look at the pic, I drew there a black line in photoshop, how do I make that line?
How do I extrude the vertex of the spline?

!

By creating a new line, then fuse/weld the vertex like you said earlier.
Sorry, the question didn't hit me in time :)

Thank you so much, Ramon!
lol, I created a new line, welded it to the circular spline, & hit the render button.
Check it out:

does it look realistic or should I add something?
I think it's too straight :X

(Maxwell render).

The string looks good, might want to model the part where the string is held in place (bridge or something?)

Yeah, I think it's waaaaaay down there, with the guitar body.
I'm still working on the head and neck, then I could start doing the hard work :P
thanks for your time & help.

Thanks for the help, I'll manage it from now on.

I dont know how realistic you want your model to be, but guitar posts (the part of the tuning peg that holds the string in) should have a hole in the middle and the string is passed through it, when in tune, the string should wrap around the post at least 3 times...and bigger strings (E A D) are nickel wounded (just like in the image below).

Edit: your peg post also need to be fatter bigger at the bottom, it slims down in the middle and gets bigger at the top.

I see..
well as I said i'm not really a guitar master, I'll try to wrap it a few more times and make a hole in the middle, but meanwhile I can am satisfy with my result, because the view is going to be from top only anyway, for last render.
and by the way, on my refrence it's wrapped only once ;|
thanks for the comment!
