Y'all probably think this ****s but....

...Hello People

My first post too, wow *grin*

I've been browsing this place (introduced to it only yesterday) and see tons of beautiful stuff, so I almost hesitate to submit my junk but..... well. Here it is

http://www.NinaGoddess.com/video2.html

Even has a "making of" video, ha ha ha ha ha.

For my excuses: This is the first time in many years I used max (I dabbled w. version 1.0 when it was new... I had a competing product myself (http://www.master-zap.com/rtk.html) back then). I started w. this video just a month after getting it so the textures on some things are less than stellar... LOL

And problem was I had to get the video done, so the less than stellar textures had to live through all the project (space suit really cant chance colour midstream now can it :) )

Still, its an interesting experiment mixing CGI and a lil' live action. All done all by myself, w. 2 computers, in a garage temporarily hung w. cheap green cloth (it was on sale too, who wants to buy green cloth :D )

I produced the music. The lady is my wife. It took about 4 months of long nights to render and edit together. No, its not perfect. At all. But hey... *grin*

Well thanks!!!

About the song, theres lots more MUSIC at http://www.NinaGoddess.com as well as some stuff of my own at http://www.Master-Zap.com/music/ *smile grin giggle*

As for the video... I see so much cool stuff on this BB alone it blows my mind. Cars, monsters, fantastic textures, gorgous stuff w. HDRI reflections that just makes your jaw drop. Things indistinguashable from photograps.

And here I come with my pathetic junk on quality level of Lawnmower man, directors cut... argh ... *grin*

I surely do need to learn to texture better... and yeah had I started w. this video now, it would have look a lot different...... oh well, I had sorta a deadline... (well I got one, eventually, anyway *grin* )

Glad someone likes it....

Hey, nice video, all things considered :) Music is very catchy. The virtual camera stuff works real well, though it would have been cool if you could have rigged a turntable up for some of the shots of her flying on the particles, camera gets awkward or seems to trying to keep her face-on.

And yes, well, the textures, etc., things, like you said, less than stellar. Would almost have worked more if the entire thing was stylized, the clementine map on the moon looks 'too real' next to the rest.

Anyway, don't want to pick it apart and get into every issue..

What'd you use for keying? Looks pretty clean..I kind of wondered if the green glow was to compensate for spill until I saw the making-of thing :D

Be interesting to see the next one..

I keyed it in AfterFX using the Matte Choker to help me clean the matte up...

The main problem is DV... A PAL DV camera was used, luckily, since the PAL DV format has a 4:2:0 colorspace, meaning in plain english that for each block of 2x2 pixels there is 4 luminance (= brightness) samples but only one chrominance (= hue/saturation) sample, meaning keying, at best, runs in half resolution, unless you mangle the matte afterwards.

I say lucky, because the NTSC DV format actually uses 4:1:1 colorspace, which means for each 4 *horizontal* pixels there is 4 luminance and 1 chrominance sample.... so keying to an NTSC DV file is much worse horizontally but better vertically... although in practice, fairly useless.

Anyway, I had planned all the time to do her greenish and possibly glowing. I did some tests by filming her head against a blue apron nailed to a door ;) This worked fine!

So then I bought some on-sale neon green cloth and hung inte garage, and placed my dear wife on (she later got pneumonia, maybe not FROM, but certainly HELPED BY the icy cold garage floor!! Poor girl!) it and filmed. And had green spill problems like nutty. The cloth was TOO damned neon... oh well, she was gonna be green anyway... afterall shes an alien, right? *grin*

It was all very primitive, very zero-budget.... hence no turntable. Would have been great, yeah...

But as it is now I have to frame the shot to look at the plane she is mapped to.. I pulled a matte (= opacity) file and a color file out of AfterEffects and mapped that to normal planes in 3DS.

I then found all the horrible bugs in 3DS handling of flat planes, i.e. a flat 100% plane which moves still generates motion blur in the 100% transparent area... so I had to write a fix to the motion blur to fix that (!!)

Also glows are not visible behind transparent objects.... after a while I made a hack plugni to fix that as well... but in some scenes - the liftoff notably - you can clearly see how the disk is not glowing "behind" her, only "in front" of her. Oh well....

Either way, even though it might not be looking TOO smashing from a texture viewpoint, keep in mind its 5 MINUTES LONG, and to get 5 EDITED minutes, I have probably rendered a hour+ worth of raw footage to choose from, since the initial shots was done in a very trial-and-error way, as well as the original filming was done only with a vague "in my head" plan, no storyboard. And it was cold on the floor so we had to shoot quickly... heh.

Actually ALL texturing is not COMPLET crap, see this detail of an oil-leak on the spaceship ;)

Also the soot on the end of the engine is painted into the color and specularity layers....

Actual frame from the video... most frames are kinda ugly though since there is soo much panning going on they are kinda washed in motion blur all the freaki'n time ;)

Hey there Zap!

I agree with previous statements, nice video all things considered. Very nice actually! I mean, I think you yourself have a feeling that the next project can be 10x better with more time and preparation, so for a first try - in your basement nonetheless - this is IMHO awesome! I guess I wish that I too could find the time to embark on similar projects myself... and have a girlfriend (or wife) that is into music or something related.

Gotta tell ya, I almost spilled my coffee when I saw the girl on the floor - when I saw her before I read more I could have sworn that it was Sandra Bullock! and then I read you were married to her! Well... :p

Nice work on her part to! :applause:

Congrats!

Well garage, actually.

I told Nina (my wife) about your Sandra Bullock comment and she was purring like a kitten for HOURS afterwards :applause:

For some reason it made me think of the 80's. I don't know if that's good or bad...
