I finally got the hang of my new 1055T overclocking. I rendered a complex scene on both computer with mild overclocking and here the results:

Intel i7 860 @3.533ghz 8threads: 4min45sec
AMD Phenom x6 1055T @3.766ghz 6threads: 3min 45sec

Phenom is 22% faster.

Both machine have 4gb of ram, same brand.

Of course I could push the overclocking on both machine but this is the level I feel safe.

I doubt other softwares would have such good result on the AMD but LW really look at ease on this cpu. Im quite happy about it, its a good difference.

Both machine are at the same built price now here in Japan. i7 being only 20$ more.

Edit; After constating that when rendered without raytraced reflection, the previous scene scores were almost similar, I decided to render another scene. This time an outdoor suburban scene with global illumination. i7 860: 2min22, 1055t: 1min55.

6 threads vs 4.

Compare a current generation Intel with a comparable offering from AMD, and you will find that the Intel will smoke it. Last gen i7's beat the latest AMD.

I call BS.

i7 processors are 8-threads though....

EDIT: Look at this way, compare price vs performance. It is quite clear that the AMD-chip is cheaper than the Intel-chip in this particular case, and the cheaper AMD-chip outperforms the Intel-chip. I don't think that the original poster intended for a flame war here; just stating some facts about what his two different setups are performing.

Interessingly enough is that if you throw in some Hypervoxels in LW, AMD-chips are faster, for some reason. My 3-core AMD Phenom at 2.1GHz is almost as fast as my QuadCore Q6600@2.4GHz. At heavy raytracing though, the QuadCore wins with alot of margin. But that is 3 cores vs 4 cores.

Why BS? this is real life homemade benchmarks!

A single i7 core is faster than a single phenom core, no doubt. This is why AMD is throwing 6 for the price of 4. With an overclock you can speed the phenom to render a bit faster than the overclocked i7.

Like I said, if its your main workstation, get an i7. For render nodes, the phenom do the job just fine.

Also after few weeks of heavy use, I didnt get any crash or weird behavior from the phenom. The temps are incredibly stable at load, averaging between 36 and 39C.
