View Full Version : Intel Or Amd??
zaidoigres 09-25-2003, 02:22 AM Hi, i'm pretty close to get a new computer ($$$) but i don't know wich would be the better choice: INTEL or AMD??? it's intended for animation. Basically 3dsMAX.
Please, based on your experience, could you tell me wich do you prefer?
Sorry for my poor english. Thank you very much.

i assume youve done a search
it is the oldest thread in the book
... putting that aside, it comes down to what you can afford (and if youre a fanboy)
intel has the edge in performance, but for price : performance amd are on top.
good luck

Honestly its all relative. I think its basically of personal preference. I personally prefer AMD over Pentium, but I dont really have anything to base it on other that "i like 'em". :p Either way they are very good CPU's and like trigger_happy said it probly depends on the amount of money you want to spend.

i prefer AMD's for their raw FPU performance, however intel's latest offerings at 3.2GHz and above make it a hard choice when faced with AMD's 2GHz chips. AMD also are much cheaper in comparison when going for a whole system.
i recently upgraded to an athlon 2400+, and am pretty pleased with the chip. the barton core chips have 4 times the cache, and perform quite well under 3D.
i know that doesn't help very much, but you're just going to have to do a whole bunch of research and eventually buy what's right for you.

AMD would always be my better choice for the top performence
INTEL. all soft is made on intel platforms first I guess :D
Had looong time ago AMD and it's stability was really bad so I said to myself never agian and till then I had 3 intel's and never had a single problem with them. Also the heat of AMD is what I don't like. I just don't trust AMD don't know why

lukx: don't generalize because you picked a bad one. the instability may have come from a dozen factors. amd platforms are now less stable than their intel counterparts. this is a veery old prejudice that should be burried once and for all.
still, for 3dsmax intel is faster, even vs. amd's 64 bit lineup. if you're on a budget get an 865 board, 1024mb of ddr400 ram and the fastest 800fsb P4 you can afford, HT and SSE2 really gives that system some punch in 3dsmax. if you can afford more you could also think about a nice athlon mp system or even xeons
