I've got a sky painting I'd like to stick on a dome for the background in a small project I'm doing. Trouble is....when I render the scene the sky takes it's lighting as a physical object which leaves the resulting render looking all wrong. I thought there would be some way of allowing the sky to have faked lighting and remain completely unaffected by the scenes lights but I can't seem to find any way to do it. I had a look at Maya's sky env shader but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. I need the end result to be able to be exported for realtime use but I also need it to render properly. I've also messed with the incandesence and ambient settings on the shader but these progressively lighten and burn out the look of the sky. Somebody out there's got to know how to do this.......any takers ?

Good question, I would like to know also!

I'm sure it has to do with light sets, but I've never been able to make it work.

Have you tried the 'surface shader' instead of a blinn/lambert? If I'm correct this shader renders without taking any lights into account, perfect for situation like this.
To prevent more trouble you should also turn of shadow casting on your skydome object.

I could be way off from what you may be talking about but if your sky scene is on a sphere or plane and you don't want any lights affecting it, then go to Lighting/Shading - Light Linking - Object Centric. Then look for the name of the sphere of plane. Select it and un-highlight all the lights that are affecting it.

Hope that helped. If I was way off from what you need, sorry

thanks guys. The surface shader sorted out my sky and was exactly what I was looking for. The light linking sorted out another problem that I hadn't even considered yet so double jackpot result.....
