I have a cousin who is relatively young (13) and he wants to learn maya. He is asking me for sites or even online tutors!!! What should I tell him?!

Digital Tutors probably wouldn't be bad for someone that age. The intro level videos start off very slow (mind numbingly slow if you know any Maya), so it should be relatively easy for someone that age to follow - it also doesn't involve any reading, which can make tutorials very confusing even if you know what you're doing.

By digital tutors, he means the website www.digitaltutors.com/ (http://www.digitaltutors.com/)

i recommend this book as it really covers the basics to computer animation and all the processes involved. It doesn't limit itself to one program but gives a general overview of the subject.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there should be a background of traditional art, mainly drawing. If he can, he should enroll at a community college's various art classes.

Finally it needs to be hammered in that the programs are all essentially the same(eg difference between charcoal and graphite) and once the concepts are learned the program doesn't matter. If access to Maya is unavailable than he could end up wasting a lot time trying to get it instead of practicing.

Thank you guys!!! But how old do you have to be for the digital tutors site? It looks more for college students.

To sign up and use the tutorials you need a credit card so if you are paying for him it shouldn't be a problem.

if the credit card thing is an issue you can always try the 3dbuzz tutorials.

Learning from video tutorials can be tough, because they're incapable of answering questions. If you're (or his parents are) willing to spend some money (though likely not a whole lot more than a digital tutors subscription) I'd recommend finding a college student who knows Maya and would be willing to teach the kid one on one.

Meloncov I really want to find one for him but I can't. I haven't seen one!!! And yes, online tutorials did not work for me so I doubt they will work for him.
