Title: Alice in Wonderland
Name: David REVOY
Country: France
Software: GIMP
'Alice in Wonderland' is a large artwork inspired by the well known 'Alice in Wonderland' of Lewis Carroll. I worked on it since May for a contest for the french Cg community 3Dvf.
The official deadline for submission to this contest was around last week, I hope you will like my vision of Alice in Wonderland !
Done with Alchemy / Mypaint and Gimp on Linux.

This is fantastic! It's an image that bends my brain a little bit - the more I look at it, the weirder it becomes. I love the way you've woven together the different elements of the image, there's a really great flow and overall it creates a really intriguing and, in my opinion, very successful composition. Your use of the blue for Alice, the cat, the caterpillar and the water at the bottom is really striking against the warmer tones of the rest of the image, and balance the composition really nicely.
This is simply stunning work. I absolutely love it when people create really imaginative images like this - you clearly put a lot of effort into planning the composition and all the elements, and it's really paid off because you've created a truly lovely image.
Front page for you!

Exceptional work, congrats for the well deserved frontpage! As already told you before, I feel that more specs on the broken hourglass and the water torrent would have been welcome. But a masterpiece remains a masterpiece :-)
Beautiful. Colour, composition, mood, rendering - all is in perfect balance. Thank you for inspiration!

This is really inspiring. It's an amazing piece of work and with all the realizations of Alice in Wonderland I've seen it really stands out for it's style. I've followed a lot of your work through the Durian Project and this piece seems to stand out in my mind as going above and beyond the bulk of it.

Many thanks all for the comments and thanks to all friends commenting here a lot of so nice comments and I can't answer to each one but be sure I read them all carefully ,
That's a real present to receive the CG choice Award with this piece at the same time of SVMaerospace and Elhor and few time after Felideus.
Thanks ! ! !
In my opinion , the CG choice Award is the biggest, more valuable and more difficult prize to obtain in digital painting or illustration. I'm really honoured to now being displayed on the Choice Gallery at CGTalk.
And I have another reason to feel honoured ; I'm the first 2D awarded with Gimp / Mypaint / Alchemy on Linux... This openness and recognition from CGsociety is really valuable for my work with Free/Libre Open Sources Softwares on Linux.
Thousand thanks CGsociety !
( PS : Special  for Penruz , olivS, waheednasir, MichaelZHsee and PapaNinja )

Hey thanks a lot !
I think it's the good time to share my chaotic receipt ;
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof01_grid-alchemy.jpg
1. I started the image with a bit of experimenting in Blender ; I rendered a grid with a wire frame material and played with the node compositor to have a fish-eye effect. During the time I made this I thought about the feeling I wanted to develop in this illustration ; the deformation of space and time ( but this last one is difficult to show in a still picture ).
So, playing with a grid is fun in Blender and experimentation is always fun too.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof01b_applygrid.jpg
2. With Alchemy , I started to produce Chaos , ( My conception of 'Chaos' is already developed in this video : http://davidrevoy.com/?article24/video-time-lapse-lezard as well as in my DVD http://www.blender3d.org/e-shop/product_info_n.php?products_id=122 ) , and I had cut part of warped grid over the chaos. It produced a good mix of unknown shapes but in a perspective environment.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof02_alchemy.jpg
3. Here are the result of my chaos done with Alchemy, with my grid done with Blender, and the central character sketched.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof03_firstelement.jpg
4. I coloured my chaos in orange ; my dominant colour tone in the illustration and started to paint detail after details inspiring by the shapes I was seeing in the chaos. Same process than the Rorschach test (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_test) or when kid recognize shapes in the clouds ; for me a strong creative process.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof04_moreelement.jpg
5. All main elements of the illustration appear one by one this way, without particularly try to blend transition between different places.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingof05_composition.jpg
6. Of course, all this element started to create a big mess with composition, and I had to work to crop ; arrange and find transition more or less easy for the eyes to makes all the element fit in one picture. That was may be the most painful part of the illustration.
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice.jpg
7. And here is the final :)
http://david.revoy.free.fr/forums/2010-Weekly-Illustration/03-alice-makingofZ_softwares.jpg
8. In addition to the curious that didn't imagine or never seen what look like Mypaint and Gimp-painter on my LinuxMint system , I copied this 2 screenshots. Those software are really productive and are stable... a very good environment for professional digital painting.
I hope you liked this little 'making of ' , thanks again for the award !

Cute, clever, and altogether very swell, I love it.
I do, however, find the teacup in the upper right-hand corner a bit peculiar. Considering how surreal the image (and source material) happen to be, the gravitational pull on the tea pouring from the cup, however accurate in the real world, somehow feels out of place. Great piece otherwise.
