View Full Version : 2 Fantasy Character sets WIP
09-24-2003, 03:04 AM
Ok heres the jig, Ive currently come across a big chunk of spare time, so ive decided to make a few characters as a portfolio filler. 8 to be precise,
The main reason im doing this is because i feel that my abilites are getting quite good now and i want to try to create 8 characters for the same universe or game, my previous characters are all unique and i need to prove i can keep my models coherent to one another.
Another snag is i want to create them all in 8 weeks, yep thats right 1 a week.
So i decided heres the best place to show the progress. and get crit i need.
Specifics - 3000 - 6000 tris 1x1024* texture for body and 1x512* texture for face and hair
4 Dark elves - princess/witch , soldier, assassin and a Captain/general
4 humans - Archer , Standard Warrior, Peasant, Knight/general
heres the first character concept, the Dark elf princess the colour scheme is just a test and may change.
and heres about 7 hours progress. The colouring here is just to ease my modelling and not an acurate colour scheme
Hope you like it , Im still working on it all except the face which is done for now. Im gonna try to keep updating this as often as possible and i hope to get lots of good crit.

Looks pretty good for 7 hours of work.
My advice would be to focus on quality rather than quantitiy. One fully built and textured model per week sounds like a situation that may cause you to cut corners. I don't know your situation but I guess if you're able to devote about 8 hours a day it might be feasable.

this is quite the undertaking. I'd never be able to keep up with that even without skinning and UVwrapping! about the model: the only thing that i think you should change is the mouth, it almost looks like a chimpanzee's or ape's to me because it's sticking out really far. that might be in the concept but jsut my $.02 good luck finishing them all in time with good quality!

thanks for the comments guys, first off i'll tell you my reasoning behind the 8 charachters in 8 weeks.
basically I have never really been under pressure to finish work on a tight timescale, so im trying to create the pressure by setting strict deadlines for myself as if they were deadlines for a games company. This is somewhat of a challenge to myself and even im kinda worried about getting it all done to a good standard but i will try hard and hopefully have 8 top notch charachters for my portfolio, which i can say "theses were all done in a week each"
Optigon-Cg - yeah i understand quantity isnt the best route, but in industry i may be told to make 10 or so models in a few months or something, so i want to be prepared. And yeah i got as much time as i need really, as i just decided to susspend my studies at uni for a year to work on portfolio and other projects :).
BurrowingDuck - you dont like the mouth :) its actually straight from a photo refrence of a model. If thats true i bet she doesnt get much work. I'll have a think anout the mouth and see what i can do.
cheers baaah.. should have an update later today/tonight.

Ok my updates a little later than expected as my IP went AWOL last night and wouldnt let me log on at all. But i kept working on my stuff and so heres the modelling update.
about 20hrs now, I cant really judge it as ive been working in between Tv (damn you sky why did you give me so much choice)
hopefully the mouth is more to your likeing now, i pulled it in a litte and reworked the lips to be more pert.
The arms i just done and i'll be tweaking the shoulders tomorrow after some well earned sleep.
I decided long sleak gloves would suit the princess as she doesnt want to get dirty hands/arms when she fights/casts spells
Its currently a massive 5800  but i havent even started optimising so thats cool.
Im aiming to add an elf sword like the one liv tyler has in LOTR at the river / or a wand/staff i havent decided yet, any thoughts which would be better?
The colour scheme is still not decided yet there just to help me for when i unwrap at the moment.
Crit me, also ideas for more details? im open to sugestion.

That's cool, one a week...think of it as a baptism of fire.
hope you make it through, i'd advise you not to focus on the quality of the work but rather on getting the job done. building speed is a skill that a lot of people , specially us young whippersnappers overlook.
i salute you, buddy ;)

How bout a bladed Staff ... cast with it, If the baddies get too close poke them with it . Man I don't know about you but it always hurts to optimize that much good luck with it. :wip:

ok been a bit busy over the last day, have been unwrapping the character so no modelling progress to show, however i have done 2 concepts for the next characters.
Snowfly thanks yeah its gonna be a bit of a baptism of fire but hopefully im up for it.
Stygian, My Dark elf general has a bladed staff just havent done my marker sketched version yet, but it is comeing, i think im gonna settle for a dagger or wand at the moment.
Hopefully have the textures ready to start by tomorrow morning. If i can get through the mind numbing boredom of uvwunwrapping. which is as you guessed not my favorite thing.
09-29-2003, 12:45 AM
Ok finished unwrapping. and started texturing the head. Day 5 of the first week so 2 more days too finish the first model. which i think is acceptable
heres the progress SORRY FOR THE GREEN BACKGROUND. :)
I'll be working on the body tomorrow, then i'll touch it all up to make it look nice.
Crit welcome as always :)

Damn you maintenence i spent 10 mins typing clicked post and then it was lost in the void ( guess the maintenence is for our benefit tho so i'll forgive you :) )
Thanks Tylak always nice when people like your work, hopefully i will be able to finish all 8 characters in the 8 weeks and i intend to keep posting regularly. the only things that could stop me are industry interviews or my parents nagging me to get a job.
Well I hope you all like whats comeing, i spent the good part of today working on the basic textures so that tomorrow i just got to do a details and she'll be finished.
here we go
Ok the picks are self evident but im gonna give an explansion of the details.
The dress. Is a pure blck base to blue waist gradient fill. from the black there are several lightning bolt styled markings going right up the dress. the black is meant to represent night time so i put loads of stars on the black bit and up the black lightning bolt type things. The dress is supposed to be glittery and have an air of mystery or magic about it. also it is meant to say expensive and regal, since she is a princess.
The belts are more accessories than practicle part of the clothing, they are to signify chastity as well.
The chest armour is a magical piece of armour that is imbedded with pearls and will eventually have runes drawn on it.
The shoulder pad is gold armour with the skin of a harpy stretched across it on the skin is the house crest, ( the current emblem is just to show positioning and may change) it is magical and protects the wearer from spells.
hope that explains it
crit and comments always welcome. hope you guys are likeing what you see so far.
will have the final model by tomorrow, it may not be rigged tho, i might leave all rigging till i finished all 8 characters.
10-01-2003, 02:27 AM
Ok finished model 1 DARK ELF PRINCESS.
Now onto either dark elf warrior or assassin. probably the warrior next.
heres a little posed pick and a detail of the short sword.
I'll post a few more images and a wire in the next few days.
I hope you guys like the model, and hope you keep watching this space for the next model.
crit or comments/questions welcome :)
10-01-2003, 07:42 AM
so..you rigged the model after all. it looks tops. not mind-blowing yet, but the important thing is you made it.
still following this thread.. ;)
10-01-2003, 03:12 PM
thanks snowfly, yeah its not the most amazing model but like you say i made the deadline i set myself.
The rig is only a temporary rig, i just quicky did it so i could pose her a little. Im gonna do it properly at the end.
10-02-2003, 03:50 AM
Ok the Dark elf warrior is my current model and i gotta say i went kinda crazy and sat at the pc for about 6 hours straight to create this basic model, i reworked my concept earliar today but cant find my scanner, think my bro must have took it to his house.
Basically i made him alot bulkier and stonger looking, ive given him a full face mask and helmet as there would be alot on screen at once and i want to keep the poly count down
it stands at 2600ti's at the moment got a few details to do tomorrow and the weapons,
hope you guys like it
Crit always helpful :)

I havent gone anywhere. Im still working on my models, sorry i havent posted but i had to reformatt my Pc. :( so i lost 2 days which is quite quite gay. But i got everything back too normal and now on with the models.
If i ever meet anyone who make viruses im gonna break their fingers by the way.
Im pushing the schedule back by 2 days too, cause i think a week is a rush so losing 2 days is gonna create inferior work. so Friday midnight is the new deadline for each model.
10-10-2003, 01:41 AM
ok my first proper update for a while. hope you guys all like it so far. Ive been working on the armour for about 6 hours today. i decided scale mail looked a bit more evil. and dark elfish than chainmail so ive gone with that. heres the update....
So What do you think? all crit and comments welcome thanks.
my 8 characters in 8 weeks is still going welll despite my parents forcing me to get a part time job. ( damn them, looks like a lot of spare time will be used on this project :) not that i mind)
