I rigged a bird, and added ik handles to the feet (raise etc.)
but am missing ability to have them stay ground level when the main joint is moving.

is there an easy way to do so ?

You still need to setup IK from the ankle to the ball of the foot as an IK SC chain. This is what keep the foot level with the ground. There are several examples in the forums.

Take a look at the file here:

sudipto1990 you condricted your self in your posts.

Tbone if you take a look at the forum posts and take a look at those files. You should be able to reverse engineer the rigs. Its a fairly simple setup.

You use RP (Rotation Plane) IK for the Leg and SC (Single Chain) IK for the Ankle to Ball and Ball to Toe joints.

From this point you can setup either Reverse Foot or Melvin(*) Foot setups for the Controls. Either one works just fine. Just take a look at the parenting and location placement of controls and groups in the Files.

* Melvin refers to the orginal Maya tutorial character setup docs. The Character Setup from Maya 1.0 still works well.
